Reading and Math - Week ending 9/16/16

Reading -

This week we are reviewing more of Soft C and Soft G. There are a few challenging words this week and it is hard to know what sound to use with c or g in the middle of a word like angel or cancel! We are discussing not only the spelling, but the meanings of words to increase our knowledge of vocabulary. Please remind them to be reading the stories I send home (usually one on Monday and another on Wed/Thurs.) along with other readings up to 30 minutes each night as well as to study their red words.

Pre-Algebra -

This week, we are continuing in the integer world of absolute values, positive and negative numbers. By the end of this week, we will be mastering not only adding and subtracting negative and positive numbers, but we will be multiplying and dividing them and knowing which sign to keep! Be sure to ask them some of the rules they are learning and see their interactive notebooks. Also, ask to check their vocabulary lists weekly as we make vocabulary a part of our everyday math journey.

The list below includes upcoming quizzes and tests this week. We will spend all day before test day in review and they will have a study sheet completed in class and for homework with all of the information to study along with their Interactive Notebook.

9-14-16 - Wednesday - Ch. 2 Vocab Quiz

9-16-16 - Friday - Ch. 2 Test (depending on everyone's progress)

I am so proud of how the class did on their Ch. 1 tests! You can keep all math papers, but please sign and return the test.

Please encourage your student to come see me from 7:45am - 8:15am for extra help if needed!

Reading and Math - Week of August 29 - Sept. 2, 2016

Reading -

This week we are reviewing WILD, OLD WORDS and VCCV syllabication. It has been very helpful to learn each student's individual strengths and weaknesses. Together, they all help balance each other out! I have been very impressed how they are eager to help give their fellow student a clue when recalling a key word during Association Drills or how they encourage each other in their reading. Please remind them to be reading the stories I send home each evening along with other readings up to 30 minutes each night as well as study their red words!

Pre-Algebra -

This week, we are stepping into the coordinate plane territory of the X and Y axis and ordered pairs. We will embark on locating points on a graph, identifying a function and multiple ways to use them. Finally, we hope to discuss scatter plots and how to interpret them. There will be a small vocabulary quiz on Wednesday and the Ch. 1 Test on Friday 9-2 will cover what we have been covering in Ch. 1 this far. We will spend all day Thursday in review and they will have a study sheet completed in class with all of the information to study along with their Interactive Notebook for Thursday night.

Please encourage your student to come see me from 7:45am - 8:15am for extra help if needed!

Reading and Math - Week of August 22-26, 2016

Reading- Last week, we reviewed ck, tch and dge with great success. This week we are reviewing magic e and everyone is settling in well! We have a great routine down for our OG Lesson time each day and I am so proud of each student and their adjustment to the new school year at GRACEPOINT! Continue to allow them to spend 30 minutes each evening for reading and to study their red words.

Pre-Algebra -

Last week we reviewed word problem set up, unit conversions, decimal addition/subtraction & multiplication/division, measurement and graph plots. We began this week with Algebra vocabulary and with Order of Operations review. I am proud of how each student is trying their best at some challenging concepts!

  • Every week we will have homework nightly as well as a weekly IXL assignment

  • To assess, there will be periodic quizzes (mostly to see if they understand concepts) and tests weekly or at least every other week

  • Projects will be once or twice a semester

This week:

*Review Order of Operations, numeric expressions, algebraic expressions and properties of addition and multiplication within those expressions

*Vocab. Oral Quiz on Wed. Aug. 24th

*Quiz/Test on Fri. Aug. 26th over Order of Operations, writing numerical and algebraic expressions from verbal expressions and properties.

I will continue to move at the speed that the majority of class does. I encourage any student to see me during my morning hours of 7:45am - 8:15am for extra help!

Have a great week!

Blessings,

Mrs. Rainey
