Language Arts Week of 8/22/16

I hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful weekend after our first full week of school!

Today we finished reading the short story "Eleven" by Sandra Cisneros. You can find it in the Reading section of your child's Language Arts folder if you'd like to read it with them at home. It's a wonderful story that I believe the students enjoyed! Both Friday and today, we practiced using our Reading Response journals to reflect and respond to our reading.

The students are not yet required to respond in their journals for homework. They have only been assigned the thirty minutes of reading, which may include a reading passage assigned by their reading teachers, the novels they selected to read at home, and/or any other assigned reading. As soon as I feel we have practiced enough with the response journals in class, I will have them write "Read for 30 minutes and Respond" in their agendas for homework.

We began our daily cursive practice today using Handwriting Without Tears, and this week we will begin to tackle grammar concepts beginning with nouns.

I gave each student a "Homework Grace Pass" today that they may use this nine weeks to be excused from one night of homework. As I explained to the students, this pass cannot be used on a project. :)

If you did not attend Parent Night, please go over the syllabus that is inside your child's Language Arts folder with your child and then sign and return it. Thank you!

I am looking forward to a wonderful week!
