Week of November 11th

Wow, it is hard to believe we have only one week until Thanksgiving break!  The time is flying!  This past week, we looked at words with the VRR pattern.  This is a vowel followed by two r's as in the words hurry, berry, etc. This week, we will explore words with a V/V pattern.  These are words that contain two vowels right next to each other, but instead of working as a vowel team, each vowel is sounded.  Usually, the first vowel is long, and the second varies according to the syllable type and it can be short, long, or make the schwa sound.  Some examples of these words are:  poetry, fluid, create, graduate, rodeo, and fuel.

As always, Each night, the students will have a reading passage to practice and they will have new red words on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.  Please be sure to have your child practice the reading passages each night, review all red words on their ring, and look over their Root Word list.  This is a list of all prefixes, roots, and bases that we have learned.  If you every have any questions about what we are doing, please don't hesitate to email me!

Week of November 7th

It was great meeting with all of the parents for Parent Conference Week and now we are starting a new trimester!
This past week, we finished up with 211 Doubling rule, then we moved on to or making /er/ sound.  This week we will talk about ar making the /er/ sound and also we will look at words with the VRR pattern.  This is a vowel followed by two r's as in the words hurry, berry, etc.

Week of October 29th

This past week, we learned 211 doubling.  This rule states:
In a multisyllabic word (2+ syllables), if
1)The root word ends with 1 vowel + 1 consonant and
2) The suffix begins with a vowel and
3)The accent is on the last syllable of the root,
then we double the consonant before adding the suffix.

Here is an example:

begin'   +    ing    = beginning

This has been a hard concept for them, so this week, we will spend a little more time on it and if they are ready, we will then move on to  or and ar making the  /er/ sound.

Week of October 22nd

This past week, we read and spelled words with -gue /g/.  The students did a great job putting together prefixes with the roots of these words to derive the meaning!  I'm really proud of them making these connections! This week, we will be learning 211 doubling.  This rule states:
In a multisyllabic word (2+ syllables), if
1)The root word ends with 1 vowel + 1 consonant and
2) The suffix begins with a vowel and
3)The accent is on the last syllable of the root,
then we double the consonant before adding the suffix.

Here is an example:

begin'   +    ing    = beginning

I know that's a lot to remember, but we will work through it and they will be pros when we are finished!

Have a great week!
