I hope you all had a wonderful time enjoying the Thanksgiving holidays with family and friends!

During our time together in reading we have begun our study of vowel teams! The girls are quite excited as they see their own forward progress! The first two vowel teams we have introduced are ay and ee.  Keep up the good work as you practice the red words and read the story together with your daughter each night.  Often times you will see the same story two nights in a row.  I think it's important to get sufficient practice reading a story and multiple exposures to a story will be beneficial.

We have been working on a new type of syllable in class! We have been working on the consonant -le syllable.  We see this type of syllable in words like: bubble or title.  When we see this syllable, we know to start at the end of the word and count back three letters and divide the word into syllables! This helps us to decode the word more easily. Be on the lookout for "consonant -le" words as you are reading together!

During our time together in reading, we have been working with a specific pattern used to divide words into syllables.  We have been using the VC/V pattern. These are called "camel" words.  It is the same pattern used to divide "tiger" words, but we divide the word into syllables after the consonant instead of before the consonant.  When we do this, we have a closed syllable with a short vowel sound as opposed to an open syllable with a long vowel sound.  Be on the lookout for these "camel" words as you are reading together!!

Enjoy your Fall Break and we will see you in October!!

Did you know the suffix, -ed can actually make three different sounds? During our reading time together, we have spent time practicing all three sounds! And just as important, we know that it causes the verb to become a past tense verb! Meaning that the action has already happened! :) Be on the lookout for those past tense verbs as you are reading and spelling together!

This week during our time together in Reading class we have been reviewing common suffixes found at the end of a word.  We have looked specifically at
-est, -ly, -ness, -ment, -ful, -less, and -ness.  I encourage you to look for words that include one of these suffixes as you are reading together each night.  See if she can tell you more about that suffix.  For example, how does it change the word?, what does it mean?  We are off to a great start and I am enjoying these girls a great deal!!
