Mrs. Ransom's Blog

Becky Ransom is a Reading Teacher at GRACEPOINT. She  retired from Cobb County Schools with 27 years experience.  She taught kindergarten, first grade, second grade and was an Academic Reading Coach. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Child and Family Development and Early Childhood Education along with a Reading Endorsement. Mrs.. Ransom is an Orton-Gillingham certified teacher. Becky has two adult children and has one grandchild.  Becky and her husband attend Sanctuary Church.  They love to travel, garden, and spend time with family, friends and their grandson Townes!.  They cheer for the Georgia Bulldogs and Atlanta Falcons!

Reading Group 1 and 2

Reading Group 1
This week in reading I will be introducing the skill called: 1-1-1 Doubling.  The rule states ( 1 syllable word, short vowel, 1 final consonant, the suffix begins with a vowel, double the consonant and add the suffix: begging). In Morphology, we will be adding the prefixes: ad: to/towards; se: apart/away and the suffix: ate/ state of.  Continue to practice Red Words nightly.
 
Reading Group 2
This week in reading I will introduce the suffix rule ed. There are 3 sounds for ed/ d/t/ed. We will look at " ed/id sound" first. The meaning of the "ed" suffix is  already happened or past tense.  We continue to review in Morphology the Level 1 prefixes, bases and suffixes.  Be sure to practice Red Words nightly.
 
Remember: Field Day is this Friday morning and the Giddy Up FundRaiser is in the afternoon.

Reading Class 1st Period
Parents,
This week in reading we begin "r" controlled vowel skills.  This is also known as syllable type.  We will begin with "ar" pirate and "or" an or are!  In morphology we have explored the meaning of: photo-light; phon-sound/voice; graph/gram-write; and micro-small/tiny.  Be sure to have your students read nightly and discuss the passage.
 
Reading Class 2nd Period
Parents,
This week we will continue the skill "tch". The final "ch" sound in a 1 syllable word with a short vowel is spelled "tch". Be sure to practice nightly your child's red word for the week.  Be sure to have your child reading nightly from thier blue folder. I morphology we discussed last week: pre-before.

Reading Class !

Good Afternoon!  I hope your Thanksgiving was happy and blessed.  This week we continue on vowel teams and will look at words with the pattern of "ay". (pray, hay, relay) In this skill of words you will find the "ay" at the end of a word.
Remember to read skill passages nightly. During the month of December, I encourage each student to keep a list of new vocabulary words. Be sure to practice the meaning of the word and use them in conversations. I hope you have a good week.

Reading Period 2

Good Evening!  I pray that everyone made it through Thursday's storm safe and sound.  This week in reading we will review beginning "l" and "r" blends.  We will review the prefix: "un"-not ; suffixes: "ist"-a person who and s/es- more than one. Be sure to check in with your student's homeroom teacher for your conference schedule.  Conferences this year will be by Zoom.  I look forward to sharing all the things we are doing in reading.

Reading Class 1

Good Evening! I hope you made it through Thursday's storm safe and sound.  This week we will review the vowel team of "ee". (bee, eel, weevil) We will also be reviewing several prefixes, bases and suffixes that we have covered so far this year.  Be sure to check in with your student's homeroom teacher for your conference day and time. Conferences will be on Monday and Tuesday of next week.  Conferences will be done through Zoom this year.  I look forward to sharing the skill we have been learning in reading.

Reading Period 2

Happy Fall!  This week in reading we will begin to look at the skill of beginning consonant blends, (bl, fl, gl, pl, sl).  In morphology, we will review the prefix of "un"/not (unfit) and the suffixes of s/es.  Fall Conferences will be November the 9th and 10th.  More information will be coming home this week.  Be sure to practice old and new red words each week along with reading passages.

Reading Period 1

Happy Fall!  This week in reading we will be finishing up the Rule of "consonant + le and stle".  We  will continue to add suffixes and prefixes to these words.   (unbridles)  In morphology, we will look at the following skills: base word of "wr" which means to twist and the suffixes of "en" to make , made of and "ly" like in quickly.  Fall Conferences will be November 9th and 10th.  More information will be coming home this week. Be sure to practice old and new red words daily along with reading passage.

Reading Period 2

Welcome Back from Fall Break!  Hope your time with family was relaxing and restful.  For the next two weeks in reading, we will continue to review these skills: cvc words with short vowels; when to use c (cat) and k (kite) rule; adding s/es to the end of words and learning the welded sounds of "am/ham" and "an/fan."  In morphology,  we will continue to review the prefix "un/not" and  the suffix "ist/a person who".  Be sure to practice new and previous red words during the week.  There are fun activities for red words in your child's Blue Reading Folder. Nightly reading homework will be passages that have the skill we are learning in class. 

Reading Period 1

(ble, cle, dle, fle, gle, ple, tle) In morphology, we will review the suffix "ly" and "en".  Be sure to review new and previous red words during the week.  There are several activities to do with red words in your child's Blue Reading Folder.  Nightly reading homework consist of passages from the skill we are discussing in class.  Be sure to ask your child to retell/summarize the passage and give you details from what they have read.

Reading Group 2- Week 1

We made it through the first week of school.  It was good to be back at GRACEPOINT!  I enjoyed the smiling faces and hard work.  This week in reading we will review the short vowel sounds of a/i and the consonant sounds of s, t, b, f, c/k, d, p, n, g, h, r.  We will continue to learn the "tapping out " strategy we use in reading.  We will work on making CVC words and adding "s" to the end of words. (more than 1-cats)  In morphology, I will introduce the prefix "un" which means not. (unfit)  Be sure to check the blue reading folder nightly for reading homework and red word practice drills.  We are off to a great start!

Reading Group 1-Week 1

We made it through the first week in the classroom.  It was good to be back at GRACEPOINT and work with students.  I enjoyed the smiling faces and hard work.  We will continue to review for the next several weeks in reading.  This week we will review the skill of Open Syllables and words that end in "y" but make the long I and e sound.  Please be sure to check the blue reading folder nightly for reading homework and red word practice drills.  I am looking forward to a great year!

Reading Periods One and Two

Parents,
I am looking forward to meeting with you this week to share all the great things your child is accomplishing in reading.  Be sure to check-in at the front desk when you arrive for your conference.  Students will return to class on Wednesday!
Reading Class One:
We continue in OG with the reading skill called "Camel" words (vc/v-camel; timid, seven).  We are working on syllabication of these words and adding prefixes and suffixes.  Students should be reading and rereading passages each night for 20 minutes.  For extra fluency practice, your students can take apart the passage and use the sentences for accuracy and speed.  (you can write these sentences as flash cards and put them on a ring Have your student retell the story orally.  You can ask them main idea and to give several details.  Ask them the question, "What do you think would happen next?"  This is a great way to review predicting and inferencing. Thank you for signing their homework nightly. Also, have your student review and practice those red words nightly.
Reading Class Two:
We continue in OG with the "Soft C" sound. (ce, ci, cy says "s").  We have begun to syllabicate words.  We are also adding prefixes and suffixes to old and new skills.  Students should be reading and reading passages for 20 minutes nightly.  For fluency practice, have your child use the sentences form the passage for accuracy and speed. (you can write the sentences as flash cards and put them on a ring.) Have your child retell the story out loud.  Spend some time asking them the 5 W questions. (who, what, where, when, why)  Thank you for signing their homework nightly.  Remember to practice writing those red words during the week.

Reading Periods 1 and 2

Good Evening!  Be sure to check your e-mail and messages from GRACEPOINT about the weather.  Due to the possibility of black ice, there is NO school tomorrow. (February 21st)  I hope all of you had a nice Winter Break.  In your child's Thursday folder, you will find the confirmation forms for Conference Week.  Please sign and send them back on Monday.
Reading Period 1-4th Grade
We will begin next week with the skill of the sounds for "ed". (d/t/ed) In Morphology, we will look at the suffixe "en" (which means to make or made of) and the base fac/fact/fect (which means to make or do). Please double check for reading homework nightly.  Your students need to review their red word ring and then use activities to practice their red words for the week.
Reading Period 2-2nd and 1 st Grade
We will review next week the skills of Rabbit Words (VC/CV) and Reptile Words (VC/CVCe).  In Morphology we will be adding previously prefixes and suffixes to Rabbit and Reptile words.  Please double check for reading homework nightly.  Your students need to review their red word ring and then use activities to practice their red words for the week.
