Reading Periods One and Two
I am looking forward to meeting with you this week to share all the great things your child is accomplishing in reading. Be sure to check-in at the front desk when you arrive for your conference. Students will return to class on Wednesday!
Reading Class One:
We continue in OG with the reading skill called "Camel" words (vc/v-camel; timid, seven). We are working on syllabication of these words and adding prefixes and suffixes. Students should be reading and rereading passages each night for 20 minutes. For extra fluency practice, your students can take apart the passage and use the sentences for accuracy and speed. (you can write these sentences as flash cards and put them on a ring Have your student retell the story orally. You can ask them main idea and to give several details. Ask them the question, "What do you think would happen next?" This is a great way to review predicting and inferencing. Thank you for signing their homework nightly. Also, have your student review and practice those red words nightly.
Reading Class Two:
We continue in OG with the "Soft C" sound. (ce, ci, cy says "s"). We have begun to syllabicate words. We are also adding prefixes and suffixes to old and new skills. Students should be reading and reading passages for 20 minutes nightly. For fluency practice, have your child use the sentences form the passage for accuracy and speed. (you can write the sentences as flash cards and put them on a ring.) Have your child retell the story out loud. Spend some time asking them the 5 W questions. (who, what, where, when, why) Thank you for signing their homework nightly. Remember to practice writing those red words during the week.
