Reading (Period 1)

Course Description

Posts

February 4, 2019

I can't believe it is already February! The students have been working very hard and are making great progress. They are very close to finishing level 2 in the GRACEPOINT Scope and Sequence of skills. They have worked on the suffix "ate" in words such as locate, translate, implicate and complicate.  They also worked on "ir" in single and multisyllable words, such as third, circle and thirsty.  This week we are working on the Y-Changing rule. If a word ending with Y has a vowel preceding the Y, the Y stays and you just add the suffix (boys, enjoying, dismayed). If a word ends with Y and has a consonant preceding the Y, you change the Y to I and add the suffix (babies, spied, cries). There are always exceptions to rules, and words like "paid, laid, and said" are good examples of these rule exceptions. Next week we will begin working on "ion" used as a final stable syllable in words such at location, translation and complication. This will tie in well with what they learned previously about "ate" as a suffix.  They are learning about word sums and how to break down words to determine meaning. Please remember to have your child practice their red words using whole body movements (jumping jacks, bouncing a ball, sky writing). Also, please have your child read their concept skill story/passage at least 2 times each evening.  Have a great week!!

January 7, 2019

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a blessed holiday!!
This week we will completing a review of all previously covered skills.  We will focus especially on R-Controlled words (or, ar, er, and er), as well as 111 doubling and e-dropping.
After completing the review, we will move on to "ate" and "tion."  "Ate" is a suffix and "tion" or "ion" is a final stable syllable.  We will spend a lot of time covering these 2 skills. We will also begin using an interactive notebook in addition to our usual Orton-Gillingham notebooks. These new skills are quite challenging and will require practice at home. I will be sending home practice sheets next week. Please remember to read your concept story each evening (at least 2 times). Also practice reading and SPELLING your red words.
Have a great week!!

December 5, 2018

We have been practicing and reviewing the 111 Doubling Rule for the past 7 days.  When a word has *1 syllable, *1 short vowel, *1 final consonant, and the suffix begins with a vowel, then you double the final consonant before adding the suffix.
Examples of this rule are the words: running, stopped, and slammed
This week we began learning about the E - Dropping rule.
If a base word ends with a silent E, and the suffix begins with a vowel, then you DROP the silent E and add the suffix.
Examples: hope + ing =  hoping / poke + er = poker
Exceptions:
Words  ending in -ee, -oe, and -ye (seeing, agreeing, canoeing, dyeing
Words ending with -ce or  -ge - The final e usually  remains to maintain the soft c or g sound. (changeable, replaceable)
The students have learned a lot about reading and spelling words that do and don't follow these rules.
Please remember to practice reading and spelling your red words every night. Please read your story aloud at least 2 time each night.
Enjoy the Holiday Season!!!
