Week of May 13-17

We are continuing our practice on the multiplication of fractions and the quiz will be on Thursday of this week.

Weeks of May 6-17

We are currently working on multiplying and dividing fractions. The MAP testing will take place this Thursday and Friday. After we finish with testing, we will continue with multiplying and dividing with fractions. I have shown the students the model to help them understand why multiplying fractions will give us a smaller number. The students also have the algorithm steps in their notes. We will be testing on those skills next week.

Week of April 8-12

This week in math, we have continued with fractions and are learning about adding fractions with unlike denominators. The students have many pages in their notes to help them remember this long process. One of those pages is a flow chart. Please review this with your child to help them remember all of the steps.

Week of March 11-15

This week in math, we are working on word problems with dividing decimals. We will take the quiz on Wednesday. Our next unit is on fractions. We will be starting with equivalent fractions and understanding all of the vocabulary.

Have a great week!

Week of February 25- March 1

This week in math, we are finishing up multiplying decimals. We are working on word problems at the beginning of the week. The quiz for this will be on Thursday. Our next unit will be adding and subtracting fractions.

Have a blessed week!

Kahoot game answer key

Please see the attached answer key. This is to aid the students in studying for their quiz on the Order of Operations on Wednesday. If they don't finish on Wednesday, we will finish on Thursday.

Week of February 11 - 15

This week in math, we are finishing up the Order of Operations. The students have been doing a fabulous job with this skill. Tuesday we will play a Kahoot! review game and the quiz will be Wednesday. Please encourage your child to write down the PEMDAS and check off each step as they complete it or see that it isn't in the problem. To help the students see how the order of operations relates to a real career, I will be showing them how fire fighters use this when determining how much pressure to charge the hoses when fighting a fire.

Have a great Winter Break on Monday and Tuesday and we'll see you back on Wednesday next week!

Week of January 28 - February 1

This week in math, we are finishing up our unit on long division. I have been so impressed by the perseverance of the students in this long process. Because they are faithful to the Woodin Ladder, they are able to follow the steps easily. In light of the possible weather event on Tuesday, I'm sending home extra work labeled "Snow Day HW" to be completed only if we don't have school on Tuesday. It is great division practice to help them study for the division quiz which will be on Wednesday (even if we don't come to school on Tuesday). The students also have a homework page on remainders and how to deal with them. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Have a great week!

Week of January 14-18

This week in math, we are working on long division. We are reviewing using a single digit divisor, but our goal is to divide by a double digit divisor. This is a long process for the students, but I have found success in using the Woodin Ladder (see homework) to keep the facts from being the difficult part. Please encourage your child to get out their notes to follow the steps. I have included "division talk" which gives your child the words to walk them through the problem. Please let me know how it is going at home.

Have a great week!

Week of January 7-11

Happy New Year! This week in math, we are working on word problems with multiplication of whole numbers. If there were errors on last night's homework, the student needs to find those errors and make the necessary corrections in addition to the Freckle assignments. My goal is to take the second part of the multiplication quiz on Friday which is 2 word problems. We have started taking notes with examples in the notebook. The 8 steps of problem solving are listed in the the back of the notebook on blue paper. The problems they are completing in the notebook are classwork and don't need to be completed. Have a great week!

Week of December 10-14

This week in math, we are continuing with multi-digit multiplication, but we are now transitioning to the traditional algorithm. The students are getting a little hung up on some of the steps, but we will continue to practice. Please, please, please, have your child refer to their notebook for help before you help them. The notes are very helpful and it is encouraging your child to be more independent in his/her learning. Since we had a delayed start on Tuesday for possible ice, I didn't see the students, but they will have 2 Freckle assignments tonight. I will collect the homework from Monday if I see them or I will get it on Wednesday in class. If you have any questions about how a skill is being taught, please don't hesitate to ask. I'm happy to have a parent session to give a brief overview of the skills. I am very blessed to have the opportunity to teach your children. They all come to class excited and ready to learn!

Week of December 3-7

This week in 5th grade math we have been learning the area model of multiplication or partial products. I realize that this isn't the way you learned, but the students have notes on how to do this (I bet they could teach you). By the end of the week, I will be showing them the traditional algorithm, but understanding the partial product method helps the students understand the why behind the answers. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Week of November 26-30

This week in math, we have been working on building our Woodin Ladders (see notes for the examples) for all of their math facts 2-12. This can be used to support your student during homework time as well as classwork. The goal is for them to have the process memorized so they can build their facts for any of the facts that they can't remember on a test, etc. We are also continuing to build the addition fact fluency through the Woodin method. The students are getting a great visual picture of what the facts. Next week, we will start multi-digit multiplication using different methods.

Week of November 12-16

This week in math we finished our addition and subtraction of decimals quiz. On Tuesday, we practice our basic addition and subtraction skills by committing them to our visual memory. On Wednesday, we started out unit on multiplication of multi-digit numbers. Before we get into the full process, we are working on building the multiplication facts ourselves so we don't need to rely on the multiplication chart to solve the problems. Tomorrow we will glue the "Woodin Ladder" into our notebooks so you can see how we built the "4s" facts in reference to dog or cat paws. We will be building the numbers 2-9 in the week following the break. Even though we don't have class on Friday, we will still have math homework on Thursday evening. Please have your child finish prior to returning after the Thanksgiving holiday.

I look forward to seeing each of you at the Thanksgiving Fall Festival! Be sure to buy your tickets to give me a PIE in the FACE :) Have a fabulous Thanksgiving full of rest and fun!

Week of November 5-9

It was great meeting with all the families at your child's conference! This week in math, we have continued with adding and subtracting decimals including word problems. The students have done a great job of following the steps to solving word problems. The quiz will be tomorrow. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Thanksgiving Fall Festival next Friday!
