Week of October 29 - November 2

This week in math, we are focusing on word problems to help us solve problems with addition and subtraction of decimals. Ask your child about the "plan" that we use to help us know how to attack a word problem that doesn't make it so difficult. The students are doing a beautiful job and the examples will be glued into their notebooks on Thursday. The quiz will be next week on this skill (adding and subtracting decimals) including word problems. Please keep in mind that I read the word problems to them. No homework on Halloween!!! Have fun!!!

Week of October 22-26

This week in math, we are learning about adding decimals. Today, we put some notes into our notebook. Have your child show you how we box the ones place to help us remember what lines up. We will continue this for the remainder of the week including adding in some word problems. See you at conferences on November 5 or 6!

Have a great week!

Week of October 15-19

This week in math we are reviewing skills from our place value unit. The celebration of learning (test) will be on Wednesday. The review packet is also due on Wednesday. I scored the students who chose to turn their packets in early so they could see if they had any areas to focus on tonight. They can make corrections, but the original answers will count. Please encourage your child to use the processes or tools I have taught them to remember each process. They rarely miss a question when they follow the process.

Freckle homework will resume for the remainder of the week starting on Wednesday. Please continue to encourage your child to work on Freckle independently.

I look forward to meeting with each of you at conferences on November 5th or 6th. Please note that your child will be involved in the conference and must attend.

Have a great week!

Week of October 8-12

This week in math, we are continuing to practice with the power of 10 and understanding exponents in relationship to 10. We have been dancing to remember which direction the decimal moves and how many "scoops". See your student's notebook for more details. The students have been doing a great job of completing their Freckle assignments. I've also started sending home "Team Challenges" on small slips of paper. The idea behind these challenges is to have the students "play" with numbers and watch what happens as they make adjustments. This can be a family activity and counts as one bonus point toward computation assessments in class. Keep it up!

Week of October 1-5

This week, we have started learning about the powers of 10. The students learned on Wednesday that the decimal will "jump" when we multiply by 10 to the right. The students have sliders in their notebooks to help them figure out how to find the answer as the decimal "jumps" and we make those jumps by scooping the numbers. More notes are coming Thursday and Friday. Please continue to encourage your child to complete their homework independently. This helps me to know if he/she understands all of the concepts and what they still need work on.

Week of September 17-21

This week we are learning about rounding decimals using a very systematic process. Ask your child to show them their "Rookie, Master, Legend" examples and have them explain what they did. There are also notes on the process in the black notebook. Tomorrow (Tuesday) will be a mini-Celebration of Learning on the topics of ordering, comparing, and writing decimals. Enjoy the Fall Break!

Week of September 10-14

This week in math we are working on comparing decimals and ordering decimals. The students have done a beautiful job with this in the classroom. Please encourage them to show all of their work (see the notebook for steps) when completing homework assignments. I find that this will cut down on errors. We will finish up the week with an introduction to rounding with decimals.

Week of August 27-31

This week in math we have been fine tuning all the skills we have learned so far this year. The students will be taking a quiz on Friday. The topics included are: reading numbers from the millions place value down to the thousandths place, writing the number in word form, writing the numbers in expanded form, and writing the numbers in standard form (just a "normal" looking number). They will also be telling the place in which a number is located and the value of that number. All of these topics are in their notebooks. A study guide will come home on Wednesday to help them prepare. This will be their homework for Wednesday and Thursday and the study guide will be due on Friday (quiz day). Remember, some guidance is always helpful to the students, but try to let them independently complete their homework. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Week of August 20-24

We are off to a great start in 5th grade math! The students are doing a great job of completing their homework and classwork. This week we have been working on reading numbers to the millions place and down to the thousandths place as well as looking at the value of specific digits and writing in word form. Information for all of these tasks are in your child's notebook which travels with them between school and home daily. This is a great resource for you to see what we are learning and how it is being taught. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
