6th Grade Math

Course Description

Week of October 29 - November 2

This week in math, we are continuing to work on multiplying fractions. The students have done a great job using their resources to help them solve the problems, including word problems. No homework on Halloween!!!! Thank you for encouraging your children to be independent with their homework! I'll see you next week at conferences.

Week of October 22-26

This week in 6th grade math, we are working on multiplying of fractions. The students have been remembering many skills we learned last year and applying that knowledge! YES! The students should continue to complete their  Freckle assignments independently. This gives me a good idea of what they can do without any assistance and the areas I need to work with them at school. See you at conferences on November 5 or 6!

Have a great week!

Week of October 15-19

This week we are continuing with fractions. We have reviewed Greatest Common Factors, Least Common Multiples, simplifying fractions and will start multiplying fractions on Tuesday. The homework will continue to be Freckle on each student's adaptive level which is where they are currently learning. Please encourage him or her to work independently.

We are also working on basic computation. It is very helpful for the students to complete these tasks throughout the week to continue to sharpen those skills. Next week we will have more challenge questions for bonus points that can be worked on as a family.

I look forward to seeing each of you at conferences November 5th or 6th. Remember that the students are part of this conference.

Have a great week!

Week of October 8-12

This week in math, we are continuing to review processes to help us with fractions. We are reviewing divisibility rules, prime and composite numbers, prime factorization, greatest common factor and least common multiple. Please quiz your child on the vocabulary each day to help them keep all of our new vocabulary straight in their minds. Each day we will add to the notes. The students have been doing a great job completing their Freckle assignments. I've also started sending home "Team Challenges" on small slips of paper. The idea behind these challenges is to have the students "play" with numbers and watch what happens as they make adjustments. This can be a family activity and counts as one bonus point toward computation assessments in class. Keep it up!

Week of October 1-5

This week, we are moving on to fractions. We will be reviewing skills from last year as well as adding new skills, such as divisibility rules, prime and composite numbers and factoring. These are all skills needed to work with fractions. Please continue to encourage your child to work independently on his/her homework. Sometimes the learning comes with a little struggle. If they aren't sure of how to do something, please encourage him/her to try. That gives me an idea of what they understand and what they still need to work on.

Week of September 17-21

This week we are wrapping up our chapter on all operations with decimals. The students will complete a practice test that will give them an idea of what the questions are like and the format of the test on Wednesday. The Celebration of learning (test) will be on Thursday and I have reserved Friday for completion of the test, if necessary. We will start our next chapter of multiplying and dividing fractions on the Monday we return from Fall Break. Enjoy the time off!

Week of September 10-14

This week in 6th grade math, we are continuing to work on long division and dividing with decimals. We will continue to practice this week and next week. The test for this chapter will be next Thursday, September 20. The test will include all operations with decimals. As I have told the students, please continue to have them be responsible for completing their homework and only ask for some guidance. The students typically work independently in the classroom, so please encourage that at home as well.

Homework due Tuesday

There was a question that most of the children skipped on their homework, so I'm asking for your help with it, but it isn't calculations or a sit down at the table kind of assignment. I want the students to find decimals in their everyday life. I've asked that it be found in a newspaper, magazine, the internet, or on TV, but it also can be in a store (I've added the last location since class). To receive credit, they need to write down one or two sentences about what they discovered. I want them to see the relevance of what we are learning in class. Thank you for your assistance!

Week of August 27-31

This week in math, we have been working on multiplying decimals and using our estimating and rounding skills to help us determine if our answer is reasonable. We are about half way through the chapter, so the chapter test will be coming up at the end of next week (Sept. 7) or the following week (Sept. 10). The chapter test will include adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals. We will be doing a mixture of Freckle homework along with pages from the book or other resources. As always, your child can come see me in the mornings for help or I can work with him/her during advisory time on Monday. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Week of August 20-24

We are off to a great start in 6th grade math! This week, we have been reviewing addition and subtraction of decimals. We will continue to review for the remainder of the week. On Monday, they will have a celebration of learning (quiz) over these two skills before we move on to multiplication and division of decimals.
