Mrs. Briley's Reading

Course Description

Posts

This week we will be reviewing the ge/dge rule. This has been tripping us up in dictation and so I want to go back and spend a few days practicing the rule.

Don't forget that Friday is Grandparents Day!

Happy Friday!!
For the past 2 weeks we have worked on the 1-1-1 Doubling Rule as well as reviewing several of the short vowel rules (ck, tch, dge).
Please continue reviewing those short vowel rules at home.
Next week we will begin the e-dropping rule. In a nutshell, you drop the e before a vowel suffix ( hope + ing= hoping). You keep the e before a consonant suffix ( hope + ful= hopeful

Make sure you are practicing spelling and reading red words each evening.
Have a great weekend!!

So proud of these 2! They both met the Fall Break Reading Challenge!
This week we began working on the 1-1-1- Doubling Rule. Basically, if a base word has 1 short syllable, 1 short vowel, ends in 1 final consonant AND the suffix begins with a vowel, then you must double the final consonant. Example: pat+ing=patting
I am going to begin sending home a copy of dictation along with fluency stories each day. Please have them read these selections orally multiple times each afternoon. The difference this can make with fluency is incredible!
Have a great weekend!
We are continuing in the r-controlled vowels this week. Specifically we will do a review of -ar, -or, and -er/-ur. We will not begin a new skill until the Monday after the break. Thanks so much for reviewing the spellings of the long vowels sounds. It really helps! Also, don't forget red words. Using some type of motor activity along with spelling each word will contribute greatly to solidifying these spellings. Have a great week!

Burden or Berden?

We are swimming in the r-controlled vowels which can certainly be challenging. We spent a good bit of time on -er. We talked a lot about -er being a comparative ending, so when we are comparing 2 things (which is better, smarter, wiser, quicker) the spelling of /er/ will be -er. On Thursday we began     -ur. This really muddles things. There are no "rules" about what spelling you use when you hear the /er/ sound so it tends to fall back to that orthographic memory. So, seeing these words A LOT is very helpful.
Both Taylor and Jack work VERY hard! I am proud of them and their willingness to persevere as things get harder. They bless me everyday!!

Happy Labor Day weekend!
This week we moved on in the Scope and Sequence to -er. We will continue -er next week as well as reviewing -or and -ar.
Some areas of weakness have been remember all of the spellings of the long vowels.
I hope this helps with you working with them at home:
You say "a" they should spell or write: a-e(a consonant e), a (open syllable), ay, ai
"e"      e-e (e consonant e), e (open syllable) , y, ee, ea
"i"       i-e(i consonant e), i(open syllable), y, igh
"o"      o-e(o consonant e), o(open syllable), oa, ow, oe
"u"      u-e(u consonant e), u (open syllable)

Please review these as much as possible.
Have a great three day weekend!!

Welcome to Reading!

This week in reading we reviewed -ar and -or. We continued to review all previously taught skills. Please make sure you are listening to your child read his/her fluency story each evening. Rereading previous stories is very valuable as well. Please make sure you are reviewing not only reading red words but also spelling them.
