Our Novel Comes to an End! :(

Last week we read Chapters 7-8 in our novel. We focused on vocabulary and prediction skills. The novel lends itself to some great inferring which is a great skill for all students. Sadly, we will cover Chapters 9-10 this week and our study will come to an end. We are also covering the meanings of several roots and affixes as well as parts of speech. Next week we will focus in on pronouns. We will continue to work on writing complete sentences.
Have a great weekend!!

P.S. Please return conference forms on Monday if you have not already done so.

October 7, 2018

We are continuing to read From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler. We are all enjoying the story and have some great discussions based on themes that we come across.
I am seeing a particular weakness in writing complete sentences so I will be focusing on this skill daily. Something that we do at school that can really help at home as well is to ask your child a basic question. Require them to answer you in a complete sentence. The more they do this, the more they understand. They do not need to write anything down when  you do this.
Ex. When is your birthday? "My birthday is..."
What do you do on the weekends? "On the weekends I ..."

Another great tip is to have them use part of the question to begin their answer.
Don't forget Reading Logs and to check your child's Language Arts homework before it is returned to school.

We began our novel study this week and we are all really enjoying it. Thank you for making sure that your student doesn't read ahead. The setting of the novel is the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. While ready we have also done some online investigating of the museum and taken a virtual tour. We will continue to read two chapters at a time and their homework will be the summary questions exactly like the ones brought home this weekend. We will put everything we work on in the red binder. We are scheduled to complete the novel by mid-October.
Have a great week!

Novel Study Time!!

I am so excited that we will begin our first novel study this week. I read this book as a preteen, loved it, and think it appeals to boys and girls. And our new study is....
This week we will focus on vocabulary and comprehension for the first few chapters. Your student's homework will center on this novel each evening. They will have assignments to read a certain number of chapters once or twice this week. Please don't have your student go ahead of the class. It just makes it more fun.

We continue to review greek and latin prefixes and roots each day as well as practice identifying subject nouns and verbs in sentences. We added pronouns this week to our parts of speech rings. We also wrote another 3 point paragraph this week related to the inventions we have been studying in social studies. We have created a system so that you will have a better grasp on what your child can write independently and how sharp their skills are when writing a final draft.

Hope you are all having a great Sunday! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Who knew there could be so many types of nouns?
Singular, plural, common, proper, collective, concrete, and abstract!!!
We have worked on all of these this week. The students are progressing nicely identifying the subject noun and verb of a sentence. We have then been extending these simple sentences to adding adverbs and adjectives all the while review the jobs of each of these parts of speech. We incorporated a lot of games, thus the photo.

Hopefully, you all received your child's first 3 point paragraph of the year. We carefully worked through each step of the writing process and I was very proud of their products. They received heavy assistance on this one and we will hopefully worked toward greater independence in writing as the year goes on.

Hoping that you all have a wonderful 3 day weekend!

Welcome to Language Arts!

We have completed our first writing exercise. It was a narrative about summer break. I was so pleased with everyone’s writing. I will say we had quite a variety of adventures this summer!  We have begun our study of nouns which will include nouns that are: common, proper, singular, plural, possessive, concrete, and collective. We are playing lots of noun games and keeping an interactive notebook.

Please make sure your child is reading for 20 minutes each night. You must sign your child’s reading log on a nightly basis for your child to receive credit. This will become a homework grade. Reading during the advisory period should not be included in your student's 20 minutes.

We will begin our first novel study after Labor Day. We will be reading From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
