Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe it is the last week of school. I am very proud of the girls and their in accomplishments in reading this year.  Their MAP testing showed they have made very good progress.   The girls have worked so hard and it shows!

Last week we focused on the vowel team ui as in fruit.  This week we are working on the suffix -ate.

I will send you an e-mail later this week sharing the skills your child needs to review this summer.  If your child reviews the new and previously learned skills they are less likely to lose  the ground they made.  Mrs. Guice is available for tutoring if you can go to her house.

It would also be very beneficial for the girls to be reading a book of their choice each day.  Please help them find books that interest them or take them to the library where they can help guide them.

Again, I am very proud of the girls!!!  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you,

Kellyn Pearson

Reading Update

The girls are doing a nice job learning some new vowel teams.  We have focused on the vowel team ew saying the two different u sounds and y saying the long I sound in a two or more-syllable word.  Later in the week after reading assessments are finished, the girls will be learning the vowel team ei that makes the long a sound.

March 28, 2019

We have been working on the y changing rule and comparing it to the e dropping rule and 1:1:1 doubling rule.

Vowel +y (ay, ey, oy, uy), keep the y / p r a y + e d = prayed

Consonant + y, change the y to i unless the suffix begins with i

We have also been learning how to spell the word if it ends in y and needs to be made plural.

The conference forms should be coming home today and with it is the list of stories I have assessed your child with and shows their Lexile level.  This level will help guide your child to know what level book to get from either the library or on-line.  This level will also help know which books to choose on Learning Ally.

Please be sure you child reads over break, so they do not lose any ground and we won’t have to review as much when they return.

Blessings,

Kellyn Pearson

In class we are focusing on the silent e rule.  These words are easier to spell than read, so we will be spending a little more time on this skill.

Silent E Rule: Drop e before adding a vowel suffix and keep e before adding a consonant suffix.

February 20, 2019

We are working on the long e spelling spelled with ea.  This vowel team can come in the middle of a word or at the beginning of a word just like ee, so the spelling of these words needs to be memorized.  I will send home a reading game tomorrow that lists many of the long e words spelled with ea.

We will begin learning the next set of morphemes that really help build vocabulary.

morphology is the study of word meaning and formation.

A morpheme is the smallest unit of meaning.

Strong morphological skills can help with problem solving unfamiliar words; words can be broken into parts to predict meaning. A good portion of the vocabulary terms in text books tend to be unfamiliar words made up of multiple morphemes.

The girls began reading a new story today called Snow.  It reviews the vowel teams we have been working on and is great practice for them.   If time, please have your child read the entire story this evening for homework.

Please encourage your child to read over break as I would like to begin a new skill instead of taking time to review.  Encourage them to read recipes, arts and crafts and game directions, magazines and books. The more they practice applying their reading skills the more confident and successful they will become.

If your child does not already have a chapter book that they are reading, please help them find one that interests them or take them to the library where a librarian can assist them in finding something that peeks their interest.

I am very proud of the girls for all their hard-work and perseverance.  Hope you and your family have a wonderful break!

February 6, 2019

This week we are focusing on the vowel teams oa, ow and ee.

Reading Ideas:

  • Take your child to the library to sign up for their very own library card.

-The libraries offer free classes and other enrichment activities.

-The librarians are also good about helping children find books they are                interested in and on their reading level.

  •   Cook with your child.

-Help them pick out a simple recipe that they can read and follow.

  • Play a new game with your child and have them read the instructions.
  • Let your child choose an art or craft activity where they must read the instructions before they begin the activity.

This week we are reviewing the 1-1-1 doubling rule and vowel teams, ay, ai, ee and ea.

Since we will not be having school tomorrow, I wanted to go ahead and give the girls their reading assignment.  They need to reread the story that was sent home today and practice reciting their rules, especially the 1-1-1- doubling rule and the rule for soft g.  They should also practice reading and spelling their sight words as well as orally using their assigned sight words in a sentence.

Hope everyone enjoys the snow tomorrow if we are blessed with it!

January 16, 2019

This week we are working on the r-controlled sound /er/ spelled er and ir as we are reviewing the spelling rules that are more challenging especially the suffix spelling rules.

***R-Controlled vowels do not follow the short vowel rules.

  • Words that end in the /j/ sound are spelled with ge
  • Words that end in the /ch/ sound are spelled with ch
  • Words that end in the /k/ sound are spelled with k unless the word ends in /ik/
  • The floss rule is not applied to r-controlled words
  • CVC Doubling Rule-One syllable words ending in consonant-vowel-consonant, double the consonant before a vowel suffix: sit + er = sitter

The girls are coming along with their reading fluency and are becoming more confident and are using expression when they read.  Hope you can listen to them read and encourage them in their progress.

Introduced the letter k can be a silent letter

Use the spelling ge instead of a j at the end of an r-controlled word

Homophones: no, know, new and knew

Sight Words:  They are to practice their new word, be able to use it in a sentence and review previously learned sight words/red words

Read:  Chapter 1 in I Know the Lord is with Us and a book of their choice

Syllabication: Review where to divide unknown words

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you,

Kellyn Pearson

Homework tonight

November 29, 2018

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoyed time with family.

The girls have been working hard reviewing some of the skills they were working on before break, however they are applying those skills to more challenging words.  We also reviewed schwa a and syllable division rules.

Today they read a new story that is coming home with them which has a math problem in it that I would like them to try and solve.   Please encourage them to draw a picture of what is happening in the story and label the actions taking place.  These strategies aid reading comprehension and help students visually know how to answer math word problems.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Dear Parents,

Thank you for taking the time to attend fall conferences as it is very beneficial for us to partner together to help your child thrive at GRACEPOINT School.  It is a joy to work with your child. Tomorrow the conference notes will be coming home in your child’s Thursday folder.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Skills we are focusing on:

  • Use ic in a two or more-syllable word that ends in the /ik/ sound. Example: public
  • Use the letter c with the vowels a, o, and u for the hard sound- the cat rule; Examples: captive, concentric
  • Use the letter c with the vowels e, i, and y for the soft sound; Examples: cent, city, cycle
  • Use the letter k with the vowels i, e, and y; the kite rule; Examples: bike, Ken, Kite, Kyle
  • Use ck at the end of a one syllable short vowel word that ends in the /k/ sound; Example: sock
  • Spell the blends cr, cl and scr with a c; Examples: crash, clash and scramble
  • The ending blends for /nk/ is spelled with a -nk. Welded sounds: ank, ink, onk, unk; Example: shrinks
  • Use the blend -ct- Examples: subject, eject
  • Syllable division for reading multisyllabic words

Daily Homework:  Along with your child practicing the nightly passage or word list, they should be reading previous passages, reading their spelling rules found in their green binder and for a challenge they can read their syllabication sheets to an adult for extra oral reading practice.  This week the students should practice reading aloud the rules for c, k, -ck, soft c and hard c.  Sight words should be spelled and read for practice.

Hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

October 30, 2018

Tonight, the students are bringing home their yellow rule folder which they are to read for reinforcement and then bring back to school tomorrow.  They also have a new story to read and should review previously learned sight words.

Since Wednesday night is Halloween, they will not have any assigned reading homework.  However, they do need to read Thursday evening even if we do not have class.

I am looking forward to seeing how they dress up for book character day tomorrow!

Oct. 25, 2018

This week we focused on comparing words that have the /ch/ sound and reviewed the rules for when to use the -tch spelling verses the ch spelling.

To help the girls with their working memory they wrote one of the /ch/ rules on index cards.  They are to practice sequencing the cards and reading it aloud.   It came home today in a small Ziploc bag.  To reinforce this rule please have them practice saying the /ch/ rule and explain it to you.

I am proud of the girls for practicing their nightly passages and reviewing their sight words.  Have a great weekend!

Last Week: We focused on reading and spelling two and three syllable words spelled with a-e.

This Week:

  • Ch exceptions- such, much, rich, which
  • Rule- ch can come at the end of a short vowel word if there is a consonant in front of the ch. Examples: punch and belch
  • Capitalizing proper nouns
  • Using question marks at the end of sentences that ask for a response. Often the question word is found at the beginning of a sentence. Examples: who, what, where, when, how, why, and does
  • Sight Words: Comparing- though, thought, and through
  • Sight Words: Comparing- their and there

Practicing sight words/red words:  To help with long term memory it is very helpful if your child practices writing their sight words as this helps with muscle memory.  They can write it in sand, on a dry erase board, with chalk, pen, pencil, or even paint. They can even trace over the red word card they received in school.

Please also have your child practice using their sight word in a sentence.  This is an important language skill that will also help them remember the spelling of the word.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

 Kellyn Pearson
