ELA Update - Week of September 3rd

We've been busy in Language Arts this week!  We have learned the following plural noun rules:

-Just ad s  (ex. cars)
-Ch, sh, s, x, z - add es  (ex. wishes)
-Y Change - add es  (ex. candies)
-F to VES  (ex. shelves)
-Stay the same  (ex. moose, deer)
-Change spelling  (ex. children, mice)

We will have an open-notebook quiz on these tomorrow.  These rules are tricky and complex, so I'm hoping that the students will use their resources on this quiz (and when they have these interactive notebooks to use in the future)!

Next week, we will focus more on writing, as we will learn how to use various journal/writing prompts.

ELA Class Update - Week of August 27th

Hi ELA Parents! We have gotten off to a great start in Language Arts.  Middle School Language Arts can be a huge "leap," and I'm so looking forward to seeing your children progress!  Just a few reminders:

-Students are to read 30 minutes a day (30 minutes on the weekend), and they only need a signature in their agendas for their weekend reading.

-We will be keeping an interactive notebook in class; therefore, there might not be that many papers going home in the Thursday folders.

-Please do not edit your children's work so that I can see what still needs more practice.

-Students will not be penalized for spelling, however, I will encourage them to fix misspelled words sometimes (using a computer, dictionary, etc.).

-Late work will count off ten points for each late day.

We have been getting organized in our ELA class (setting up our notebooks and reading journals, etc.) . The students have been practicing how to summarize what they read.  We have also been reviewing nouns, and we took a quiz on common and proper nouns.  This week, we will explore concrete and abstract nouns.

As always, please contact me with any questions!
