Week of May 3rd

Hello!
I can't believe we are just shy of three weeks of school left! Wow! This school year has gone quickly!

Sorry for not updating the blog recently, I was having technical difficulty.

We are continuing to learn our magic-e vowels and a few new suffixes, prefixes, and bases. This week we will explore  /o/ magic-e (home). My goal before year-end is to complete all the vowel sequences of magic-e.  Everyone is picking up this pattern. At times they still need reminders of what the /e/ at the end of the word is doing. I remind them of what the "job of the /e/" is. Usually, this helps them remember it makes the vowel long not short.

Please remember to keep practicing those red words!! We are still learning new ones and we will have a red word assessment in the coming weeks.

If you haven't secured a tutor for the summer, I highly recommend everyone to tutor some over the summer to not lose the skills learned this year!

Let's finish strong! 17 days left.

Week of March 15th

Hello,  I enjoyed speaking with all of you last week during conferences. I appreciate the partnership you've made with us to assist your child in reading.

This week we are continuing with magice-e /long a/. (safe). Please remind them if they are reading to you and mispronounce it, for them to look for the pattern.  What is making that <a> say a /long/a?? That magic -e at the end. :)

We are also adding in review of the short vowel rules one at a time along with magic-e. We are starting with FLOSS, then will move onto -CK, -tch, and -dge in the weeks to come.

FYI- FLOSS Rule:  In a one syllable word, with one short vowel, if it ends in a FLS and sometimes Z, we double it. We double it. (fluff, fill, dress, buzz).

Please remember to practice those red words.

I can't believe it's already February 1st! 2 more full weeks before Winter Break. We will be working hard on solidifying the skills learned and starting some new one before break.

This week we will continue with our suffix- ed. We have covered -ed says /ed/, and we are finishing up -ed/t/. We will finish up with -ed says is /d/.

Next week will be doing a red word assessment on current words given. Please remember to practice spelling red words nightly at home and reading the passages nightly.

Thank you for your partnership!

Week of January 18

I hope everyone had a nice long weekend. 4 more days of virtual learning. I know it is hard for our littles to learn this way but they are doing great!!

We are working on the suffix -ed and will be on this skill for a while since it can be a hard concept for some to learn. We will be introducing ed says /t/. (packed, helped, missed) Don't worry will  be doing a lot of practice.

Please continue to practice red words.

thank you

Week of January 11

Welcome Back! I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New year! We are excited to start this spring semester!

We have covered many skills in reading thus far. We are beginning to learn the suffix -ed. This one is a tricky one because -ed says three sounds: /ed/, /t/, and /d/. The first sound we are focusing on is ed/ed/= (tinted, printed, mended, handed). The clue for this sound is if the word ends in a <t>, or <d> it will say /ed/. You might see your child struggle with this skill, but don't worry we will be doing a lot of practice and review!!

Week of November 2nd

I hope everyone stayed safe from the storm and if you participated in Halloween activities that fun was had by all!!  I am eager to see all their smiling faces on Monday.

We have made wonderful progress in Reading. We are moving our way through the short vowel rules. They have learned the FLOSS rule and -ck rule. Ask them the cheers is they haven't shared them with you already.

Next up is the -tch a rule. Just like the other short vowel rules this one also follows the one short vowel, one syllable word ending in /ch/ we use < tch> (match, catch, patch)

Please remember to practice spelling their RED words nightly.

Conferences will be held next week November 9th and 10th via ZOOM. You all should have received your time and ZOOM Code. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Week of Oct 5th

Welcome back from Fall Break!

I hope everyone enjoyed their week of from school and had a nice and relaxing week!  I know we were all looking forward to it.

As we get back into the routine, please remember to practice spelling red words nightly! Please practice their daily red word and one more! We are having some trouble retaining the red words given thus far. Your child might not come home with a new red word until they have mastered ones given.

This week we are finishing up digraphs. Shortly we will be moving onto Short Vowel rules starting with the FLOSS rule. FLOSS Rule- one short vowel, one syllable word ending in F, L, S and sometimes Z you double it. (spill, buzz, boss, fluff) .

Please remember if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Thank so much,
Mrs. Work.

Week of Sept 21st

We are continuing to explore digraphs in reading. We will cover /th/ and /wh/ his week. We also are reviewing the blends we have learned daily during our jewel box reading along with suffix -S.

Have a wonderful Fall Break!!

If you have any questions don't hesitate to reach out.

I hope your children had a great first week! I've enjoyed getting to know them.

Here are a few expectations to help your child have the best reading experience this year:
                                            HOMEWORK
Students should read the passage, sentences or wordlists that are sent home each day- out loud to an adult. Encourage your child to "tap" the sounds when unsure of a word.

Practice reading/spelling the "red" words (learned words) which will come home in a ring. See below from some fun ways to practice. Focus on the new word sent home and review others on the ring.

Homework is very important in building reading fluency (accuracy, good pace, and expression). It also reinforces the skills we are learning in class at that time.
