Magic E

I am sure your girls have told you about learning about the Magic e syllable. They are working very hard and get so excited when we get a new skill. Yesterday we started with the e-e pattern. There are very few words with the e-e pattern but we are continually using a-e and all our short vowels rules. The girls have grown so much this year, and I am very proud of them.

Here are some questions that are great for review when reading words…

-What type of syllable is it? (We have learned 2 so far – Closed or Magic E)

-What type of vowel? (short or long – closed has short vowels and magic e has long vowels)

-What rule does this word follow? (FLOSS, -ck, -tch, -dge, Magic E, cat/kite, suffix -s – it may have more than one)

-How many vowels?

-How many consonants?

-How many sounds?

-How many letters?

The challenge as we have moved into another type of syllable is tapping the correct vowel sound. Many times, students will tap Sam for same or pet for Pete. This also becomes tricky when you have words that end with a /k/ sound. They have to decide what type of vowel and then spell either Mack or make, tack or take, etc.

Continue to practice at home and please ask some of these questions as your child reads to you.

 Thanks so much!

Fall Conferences Coming Up

Dear Parents,
Fall Conferences are scheduled for either Monday or Tuesday, November 5th and 6th. A form will come home tomorrow for you to mark your preferences. Please give us as much information as you can. If you are unable to come because of picking up siblings, please write that in the comments. Scheduling conferences at GP is quite a challenge with so many teachers involved in each child's learning. Thanks so much and let me know if you have any questions.

Reading Update

Hope you had a great holiday weekend! I really missed the kids on Friday but I received a great report that they were a wonderful group for our substitute! I wouldn't have thought or expected anything less. Thanks so much for your notes on homework about the reading passages. Please keep reading those passages to work on fluency. As your child reads, please make sure to have them go back for accuracy. Sometimes those little words like the, a, his, etc. get skipped over. Keep practicing those red words every night. As always, please let me know if you have any questions. I am here for you!
