Morphology 3 (Period AM)

Course Description

Posts

Weeks of May 6-17

We finished up MAP testing in class today. Tomorrow, we will resume our regular schedule. For the last few weeks of school, we will be looking at different roots/bases that we haven't learned in a specific unit and coming up with words associated with those bases. We are also reading short stories from Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul. As students receive summer reading assignments, we can discuss book choices (if they have any) and how to make a plan of tackling the assignment without it being overwhelming during the summer break. If there are written directions or a website to assist with this task, please send those to me or have your child bring them to school.

Week of April 8-12

We are continuing with our study of science terms and concepts through the morphology aspect. This week we have focused on cells and genetics. Ask you child about the computerized baby they created based on different traits they chose. The students are reading many articles to learn about the different topics and answering reading comprehension questions. My hope is that the students see how reading to learn is such a vital skill and what they should do when they come across information they don't know.

Week of March 11-15

This week in morphology, we will continue our study of investigating science roots which relate to the 6 kingdoms of living things. EACH night, there will be a comprehension article with questions. I am working on increasing the students reading comprehension along with their stamina. The students should also be practicing their roots each night as well.

Have a great week!

Week of February 25- March 1

This week in morphology, the students presented about the animals they read about and wrote informational papers. They all did a great job! We have finished out the week investigating different roots and learning about where the information can be found. After they investigate a root/base, they are each taking turns presenting what they discovered to the class.

Have a great week!

Week of February 11 - 15

This week in morphology, we are continuing to work on our informational papers based on the animal books read in class. The students are starting to create power points with mostly pictures and short captions. The purpose of this is to keep the students from reading their power point during their presentation to the class. The students will create note cards to support their presentation which will only have bullet points. I have started conferencing with each student to edit and revise their papers. Part of the revision process will be to add in vocabulary words relating to roots/bases we have learned over the years. While this is reading class, responding to text we read is a very important skill. The students have been working very hard and have shown great perseverance.

Enjoy the break on Monday and Tuesday next week and we'll see you back on Wednesday!

Week of January 28 - February 1

This week in morphology, we are working on reading information texts on different animals. The students are using detailed graphic organizers to aid them in pulling out the important details of each chapter. Once they are finished with the book, they will compile the information into one paper and each student will present their animal to the class. In light of the possible weather event on Tuesday, I am sending home the books on Monday for the students to complete the graphic organizer for at least one chapter. Please remind your child to also read an article on Freckle along with the comprehension questions.

We are starting a campaign at GRACEPOINT for the month of February called, "I LOVE to Read!" Please ask your student what this entails and how they enter to win prizes for reading!

Have a great week!

Week of January 14-18

This week in morphology, we are working on reading articles and responding to the essential questions about the article. The students responses are typed to aid in the editing process. We are also going to present a short readers' theater about Martin Luther King Jr. to the 1st and 2nd grade students. This week we are practicing and the presentation will be next Tuesday when we return from the MLK Jr. Holiday.

HOMEWORK:
-root card review - Ask about words using that root and have your child give you a sentence. We have been doing this during our association drill.

-Freckle Article - Please remind your child to read their Freckle article for the week

-Pictures related to Martin Luther King Jr. - We will make a Powerpoint with pictures to aid our presentation. Any pictures your child can find will be helpful. We will talk more about this in class.

Have a great week!

Week of January 7-11

Happy New Year!  This week in morphology, we are continuing our study of text structures. The students are building stamina in reading for periods of time and answering questions independently. Please remind your child to read at least one article on Freckle which includes comprehension questions. Have a great week!

Week of December 10-14

This week in morphology, we are continuing our study of text structures. They students are learning to recognize them in what they read as well as learning to write in this format. When we write, they are incorporating roots/bases we have learned up until this point. I was very impressed that this group ASKED for an additional assignment to write their own mysteries incorporating inferencing skills as well as roots/bases. I can't wait to read them next Monday, Dec. 17. The students will try to solve each other's mysteries when they are presented on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. Please remind your child to read at least one Freckle article by Friday of this week.

Week of December 3-7

This week in morphology, we have finished up our study of inferencing and are moving on to text structures used in informational writing. The purpose of this study is to teach the students to recognize each structure to aid in comprehension. Once the students can recognize the structures in what they read, we will also write in each format using roots/bases we have learned. Please remind your child to read an article on Freckle for the week.

Week of November 26-30

This week in morphology, we have been fine tuning our inferencing skills through movie clips, fictitious crime scene articles, and writing our own inferencing stories for the others to determine what we were writing about. We are also impacting the entire school by videoing the motions to roots/bases and prefixes to show to other reading classes! They did a great job! We will also be recording ourselves reading a Christmas story for the students at Brighton Academy in Africa. Their part of the story is homework for tonight to practice fluency and intonation so the Brighton students feel like they are at a special story hour :)

Week of November 12-16

This week in morphology, we worked on the roots card, cord (heart), flict (strike), and trib (pay, give). We found some interesting connections to the medical field as well as matters of the heart. There will be vocabulary.com practice that won't be due until after the Thanksgiving holidays. Please continue to practice the roots with words and meaning regularly as well as talk to your child about which story they read on Freckle for the week.

I look forward to seeing each of you at the Thanksgiving Fall Festival! Be sure to buy your tickets to give me a PIE in the FACE :) Have a fabulous Thanksgiving full of rest and fun!

Week of November 5-9

It was great meeting with each of you at your child's conference! This week, we have continued with vail/val, path, and claim/clam bases. We have explored some interesting topics this week with the vocabulary. There is a vocabulary.com list for these roots and completion should take place by next Wednesday, however, we will move on to new bases next week. I look forward to seeing all of you at the Thanksgiving Fall Festival next Friday!

Week of October 29 - November 2

This week in reading, we are working on new roots/bases val, vail (strength, power, worth); path (feelings, illness); clam, claim (declare, callout). Today we had an interesting lesson about atoms and how the base, "val", describes an interaction of atoms. We will continue to explore the bases this week and finish them up next week. Please continue to read nightly for 30 minutes and that should include one story on Freckle. Happy Halloween!!!

Week of October 22-26

This week we are wrapping up some loose ends from last week and applying those roots/bases. For the remainder of the week we will start the base "it" meaning go. We will also be working on responding to what we read in a meaningful and concise way. See you at conferences in my classroom on November 5 or 6.

Have a great week!
