Week of May 13-17

We are continuing with our practice of expressions and all the vocabulary that goes along with it. Please have your child practice the vocabulary on the yellow pages of the notes. The test will be on Wednesday.

Weeks of May 6-17

For the next two weeks, we will continue to progress in Expressions. This will be briefly interrupted with MAP testing on Thursday and Friday of this week. We will be practicing and taking the test on Expressions next week on Wednesday of next week. Our next unit will be on Equations. We have been preparing with Hands on Equations and the students are enjoying this hands on approach to algebra. As I mentioned in my email a few weeks ago, we will continue with where we leave off at the end of the school year with our two week summer session. Please refer to the email for details and fee. If you plan on sending your child, please let me know so I know how many students to prepare for the session.

Week of April 8-12

This week in math, we are learning about expressions which is our new unit. To help the students understand the concept of variables and solving expressions, we are using "Hands On Equations" to make this a more concrete process. The students are doing a great job. Please have your child review their notes each night so the different processes can be committed to memory.

Week of March 11-15

We are continuing with our chapter on decimals, percents and fractions. We are looking at how each relate to each other and how they relate to ratios, from our last chapter. This week, we are working on finding percents of a number. The test will be during the week of March 18th.

Have a great week!

Week of February 25- March 1

This week in math, we are finishing up our chapter on Ratios and Rates. The test for this unit will be on Thursday. Our next chapter will be on fractions, decimals and percents.

Have a blessed week!

Week of February 11 - 15

This week in math, we are continuing our studies of ratios and proportions. The students exercised for specific time periods so we could find our unit rate. On Tuesday, the students will investigate unit rates of sale items in the Kroger ad. We will finish the week by organizing the information into tables. The students have taken notes on the process that looks similar to finding equivalent fractions. The students have seen lots of success using this format which can be found in their notebooks.

Have a great break next Monday and Tuesday and we'll see you back next Wednesday!

Week of January 28 - February 1

The week of January 21, we worked on the Coordinate Plane with all four quadrants. The students are relating how to plot the ordered pair by comparing it to riding in an elevator. First, we must get into the elevator (+ = forward; - = back in) and then we go up or down in the elevator (+ = up; - = down). Over the weekend, the students have an extra credit puzzle to help them with plotting the ordered pairs. When they finish, it will make a picture.

During this week, we will be reviewing and taking the chapter test on integers and the coordinate plane on Tuesday. Please have your child review the practice test that will be coming home on Monday. At the end of the week, we will start our new chapter on ratios.

Week of January 14-18

This week in math, we have been learning about terminating and repeating decimals. We are discovering this through dividing fractions. For example: 1. a terminating decimal is 0.625 and the corresponding fraction is 5/8. 2. a repeating decimal is 0.333 and the corresponding fraction is 1/3. We will be practicing more of this as well as comparing these rational numbers.

Have a great week!

Week of January 7-11

Happy New Year!  This week in math, we are continuing our learning of integers. We have been comparing integers and one way that his helping us keep the positive and negative numbers straight is thinking about negative numbers as cold and positive numbers as hot. This helps when comparing -100 and 10 because -100 is less than 10. We are continuing on later this week with rational numbers (numbers that can be written as fractions) as well as repeating and terminating decimals. We will continue to have a mixture of paper and Freckle homework. Have a great week!

Week of December 10-14

This week in math, we finished up our test on Chapter 4 on multiplying and dividing fractions. On Tuesday, we will start on integers (positive and negative whole numbers). The students are excited for this new unit. Over the next few days, look for notes being added to the interactive notebook to help them understand this brand new concept. If you have any questions, please let me know. I'm happy to have a parent session to give you a brief overview of our content and how you can help your child.

Week of December 3-7

This week in math we are finishing up the chapter on multiplying and dividing fractions. We have been practicing our dividing skills. Wednesday and Thursday will be the practice test where they students will work in groups and solve each problem. We will start the test on Friday and finish on Monday, if needed. I have started doing a hybrid of paper homework with Freckle. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Week of November 26-30

This week in math, we are reviewing dividing fractions. This involves dividing whole numbers and fractions as well as fractions divided by fractions. In either case, it is most important for the students to understand that the reason that the answer is a larger number is because we are finding out how many GROUPS we can have when we divided. The smaller the fraction that we are dividing by, the more groups we will have. For example: 6 pies divided by 2/3 is 9 pieces of pie. If we are taking the 6 pies and giving out 2/3 of a pie to each person, 9 people will get pie :) We will continue practicing this week and take chapter test late next week.

Week of November 12-16

This week in math, we have been using our equivalent fraction skills when solving conversions such as pounds to ounces or miles to feet. We are using a ratio process to make this a smooth process for the students that will give them the correct answer if they follow the process each time. Take a look at the WORDS -> KNOWN -> UNKNOWN notes in their notebooks. It lays out the entire process. We will continue to practice skills through Freckle as review.

I look forward to seeing each of you at the Thanksgiving Fall Festival! Be sure to buy your tickets to give me a PIE in the FACE :) Have a fabulous Thanksgiving full of rest and fun!

Week of November 5-9

It was great meeting with all the families at your child's conference! This week, we have continued with multiplying fractions and have done this through two different modes: a Kahoot! and matching the problem with the answer and gluing them down. The students are working hard at completing this task and we will start next week on conversions of feet to inches, minutes to hours, etc. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Thanksgiving Fall Festival next Friday!
