Reading 2nd block (Period 2)

Course Description

Posts

Week of February 11th

This week, we will continue looking at -ct words (as in subject and object). We will explore the meaning of these words as they relate to the prefixes and roots that we learned. For example, the prefix con- means together, with, join  and struct means to build. When these are combined, we get the word construct which means to put together.

Also, please be sure to practice the reading passage that is sent home each night.  They should read it out loud to someone (preferably 3x if they can).  I  And don't forget...
They will have new red words on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Please be sure to practice reading ALL of the red words on their list and practice spelling 2 (or 3 depending on the night) different words each night. I am sending home a list each week with the words they should study each night. I am so proud of everyone this week doing so well on our red word review!! If you have any questions about what we are doing, please don't hesitate to email me! Have a great week!

Week of Jan. 22nd

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!  It was nice having that extra day, wasn't it?!. This week in class, we will be learning the vccv pattern in words.  This will take us into two syllable words by using two closed syllables.  As you may recall, a closed syllable is a syllable that has a vowel that is "closed up" with a consonant - ex. nap.  Now, we will add another closed syllable to create a two syllable word - ex. napkin.  The students practice labeling the vowels and consonants and they will see that there are two consonants together.  We divide between the consonants in these words - ex. nap/kin.

Week of December 3rd

We have been studying the two sound of u-e.  Sometimes, u-e will make the /oo/sound and we mark this with a symbol called the umlaut which is two small dots above the letter like this: ü. We studied this sound before the Thanksgiving break and for a couple of days this week.  Next, we worked on the second sound of u-e and this is the standard long vowel sound of u making the /yoo/ sound.  We will continue to work with this skill this week as well as distinguishing the two sounds.

One more week until Fall Break!  Can we make it?!  I think we can :).  Last week, we were quite busy practicing our -tch words and then, we started a new skill:  -dge.  This is another "short vowel" skill where words with one syllable, and one short vowel, followed by the sound /j/ will be spelled with -dge.  We will continue to work on this skill this week and if they are ready, we will explore -all words.  In addition, they are learning some prefixes and root words along with some cool motions to help them remember the meanings. They are doing a great job learning these!  I'm so proud of them!  They have also been rock stars with practicing their reading passages!  They blew me away this week!!  Keep up the good work, my little friends!
