May 5, 2019

I have certainly dropped the ball on blogging since spring break!! Reading has been going well and we have covered and review many skills. These include

ie long e

Suffix -us

C+le review

Ou in trout

Review syllable -ture

On Monday and Tuesday we will be doing MAP testing for reading. Please continue to review red words and read not only fluency stories but other reading materials for pleasure.

Week of March 25th

Last week we worked on suffix -al which means "having to do with". We have also covered -ey as a spelling for both long e (money) and long a (prey). We will begin this week reviewing the e-dropping rule. If a base word ends in a magic e AND the suffix begins with a vowel, drop the e and add the suffix.
Please review red words and the morphology deck each night. :)

March 1st

This week we learned -ey as a long e spelling that occurs at the end of a word. On Thursday we began a review of the 1-1-1 Doubling Rule. Have your student recite the rule to you and give you some examples. We will review again on Monday before moving on to the suffix -ure. Please continue practicing red words and fluency stories.

Ey

We finished up last week with a review of r-controlled vowels. On Monday we will begin working on -ey when it makes the long e sound.
Continue to review red words and morphology cards on a regular basis.

Schwa I

This week we will be working on Schwa i in the middle of a word. We also explored a few chameleon prefixes which helped to understand why words like affirm and assure have the doubled consonant. They are both (af- and as-) actually chameleons of ad-.
Fascinating stuff!!

Schwa

Last week we worked on -ive as a suffix. It makes a word an adjective and we were able to work on some pretty difficult words. We also spent a good amount of time doing word sums; pulling words apart by separating the prefix, base, and suffix. This week we are starting schwa. This is when any of the 5 vowels make the short u sound. We will focus initially on schwa a at the beginning and end of a word. Some examples are : Alaska, apart, zebra.
Looking forward to another great week!

-ive adjective suffix

This week we are reviewing -ive but are focusing on looking at it as a suffix. It makes a word an adjective! We have begun a Morphology notebook and are exciting to be working on Word Sums.
Don't know what the rest of the week will bring with the weather...

Happy Long Weekend!

This week we worked on the y changing rule and did a refresher on plurals (-s or -es). We also began creating a morphology notebook where we will add prefixes, bases, and suffixes. We will explore their meaning, examples of words that contain them, and pull words apart to do word sums. It is absolutely fascinating! When we return we will continue working on incorporating plurals and y dropping. Please have your child practice reading "No Joke" over the long weekend so that they can read it to me on Tuesday. Don 't forget red words!!

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a great break! Upon our return we spent a day reviewing short vowel rules and then spent the rest of the week learning about the suffix
-ate. This suffix makes a word a verb and means "to make or do". One thing I noticed this week were several weaknesses with red words that were learning either before this school year or this past semester. I know they are easy to forget about so please remind your student to review them each night. They should be reading them and spelling them. Having them incorporate the spelling with some movement is very beneficial.
This week we will move into the y changing rule.
Have a great weekend!!

This week we will be reviewing the e-dropping rule. I have attached a copy of the rule so that you can reinforce it at home.
Last week we finished the 2 sounds of -sion. We also covered the r controlled vowel -ir.
I am so proud of how hard Jack and Taylor both work in reading. Thank you for all of your support at home :)!

December 3, 2018

Last week we covered the final stable consonants -tion and -sion. Ms. Strack came and talked about -ion being a suffix.
This week we will begin working on -ir.
Please review red words each night. It helps with fluency and builds confidence. Also, reading and rereading of fluency stories is a must. Please be sure to listen to your child read them each night. Remember: any words that are highlighted or underlined are words with skills I have not explicitly taught. Please read these words for your student.

I'll see everyone tomorrow!

November 15, 2018

Hello!
In the past 2 weeks we have covered the e-dropping rule and final stable syllable -tion. After each new skill I am evaluating dictation to determine weak areas to go back and review. This week we are reviewing soft c. This rule is in the yellow rule folder that is in their bookbags. Please review as often as possible.

Friday is the Fall Festival! I'm looking forward to see you there!

We reviewed -dge this week. Please continue to review the short vowel rules at home. I will be sending home yellow folders on a regular basis and this is where your can find all of the rules that we have learned.
Next week we will begin the final stable syllable -tion.
Please continue practicing red words and reading fluency stories.

I will be absent tomorrow so please have a relaxing weekend!
