ELA Class Update - Week of Dec. 10th

We have been learning about the parts of a plot diagram this week (Exposition-Setting/Characters, Rising Actions, Climax, Falling Actions, Resolution).  We completed a plot diagram for My Side of the Mountain.  We've also been learning about figurative language, such as metaphors, similes, and idioms.

These are advanced concepts that we are only introducing, and we will learn and apply these more when we return from the break!

Next week, we will learn about the app Explain Everything and complete a final project on our novel.

Reading Class Update - Week of Dec. 10th

This week in reading, we've been learning about words with ARR (ex. carry, marry, narrow, arrive).  I've also been administering some informal assessments in spelling and reading to see where we should focus when we return from the break.  I'm pleased to see all of the progress the girls are making in reading and spelling!

We will continue to review and assess next week - and then our much-needed break will be here!

The girls are continuing to complete their new red word homework sheets, and it seems to benefit!

Reading Class Update - Week of Nov. 26th

We had a productive week after a week-long break!

-Reviewed French words where qu and que are pronounced "k" (ex. antique, conquer)
-Learned about words that end in or but are pronounced "er" (ex. doctor, collector)
-Reviewed all Bossy R patterns (ar, er, ir, or, ur)

We are going to start adding some word sums to our reading class routine. Ms. Strack taught us about these before the break. It's a great way to review spelling rules and begin to look more at the meanings of word parts, thus expanding our vocabulary.

Have a nice weekend!

Reading Class Update - Week of Nov. 12th

We've had a wonderful week in reading!

-We reviewed silent letter/meaning marker patterns gn- and wr-.  We also reviewed soft c and g (ex. notice, gentleman) and magic e.

-We learned about some words that have qu/que that make the "k" sound (ex. antique, conquer)

-Ms. Strack came in to teach us some incredibly helpful morphology concepts!  We learned how to chunk words into word sums (ex. va + cat + ion = vacation) and we learned that -tion is a suffix but -ion is the part that carries meaning on it's own.  The girls loved learning these more advanced concepts from Ms. Strack!

In conferences, we talked about me coming up with another way for the girls to practice their red words for homework. I have now given them a new form to complete for homework, so this will start after Thanksgiving.

I am thankful for all of you and so grateful for your kindhearted, polite children. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Love,
Mrs. Lambert

Reading Class Update - Week of Nov. 5th

It was so nice to see all of you this week! I hope I was able to convey how hard your children are working. As I mentioned, please reach out to me if you ever need anything.

This week in Reading, we have learned about the silent letter pair gn-.  We've read and spelled words with this pattern, such as sign, signature, gnat, and gnome. This has been fun, as we are learning new vocabulary words with these words, as well!

Reading Class Update - Week of 22nd

We finished our review and learned how to read and spell words that follow this pattern:

*letter y with a short sound (myth, mystery, crystal, hymn, gym, symbol, cymbal)

This Greek concept has been an interesting one to learn, and lots of the words have been difficult to spell!  The girls have continued to work hard on this.

I'm looking forward to meeting some grandparents tomorrow!

Reading Class Update - Week of October 15th

Hi Reading Parents! I'm glad I was able to reach out to all of you this week to inform you of how your child is doing in reading class. As I mentioned, please reach out to me if you ever have any specific questions. We will go over work samples during our conferences.

This Week in Reading:
-Learned about the "meaning marker" wr- which means twist (ex. wrap, wrestle, wrath, wreck, write).  We learned that while the w is silent, it is there to carry meaning!
-Reviewed OG concepts:  -ck (sack), -ic (picnic), magic e (cake) and en- (enhance)

Next week, we will learn about another meaning marker, and review other previously learned skills that need more practice and reinforcement.

Have a nice weekend!
Louise Lambert

Reading Class Update - Week of October

This Week in Reading:
-Reading and spelling words with the prefix en- (French) - ex. encourage, enclose, enhance, endorse
-Reviewed previously learned concepts (words with -ck, the prefix -ture, and words with the vowel teams au and aw)

The girls most certainly benefitted from these days of review, as these were some of the areas that needed revisiting. We will continue to move through our OG scope and sequence next week - moving into silent letters!

Have a great weekend!
Louise

Reading Class Update - Week of October 1st

Welcome Back! What an awesome returning week we have had! The students are settled back in to our routines and ready to "press on" in reading!

This Week:
-Completed learning how to read and spell with advanced suffixes (-age, -ace, -ate, -ine, -ite, ile)

Next Week:
We will start with the French prefix en- (like in the word encourage) and move on from there!  Ms. Lashley has encouraged us to review some of the more challenging spelling rules for our group, so this will be a wonderful way to assess where the students are - and work on those trickier areas! We will do this as we learn new concepts, as well.

Have a fabulous weekend!
Louise Lambert
