Reading Class Update - Week of Sept. 17th

Hello Parents! I can't believe we are almost in the month of October! This year is surely flying by. Please encourage your children to read over our break next week.

This week in Reading Class:
-Introduced suffixes ile (ex. crocodile, fragile) and ine (ex. canine, machine, engine)
-Introduced more morphology prefixes and learned the motions to help us memorize these
-Learning new vocabulary as we are building words with suffixes - this has been amazing and such a great learning experience!

When We Return:
-Learn our last suffix in this group (-ite)
-Introduce "silent letters" (ex. n in column)

Enjoy the Fall Break!  Let's hope we come back to cooler fall weather!

Hi Reading Parents!  We worked on the following concepts this week:

-Reviewed -age and -ate suffixes
-Introduced -ace (necklace, palace) and -ice (notice, office) suffixes
-Blending morphology roots into our reading class (DIS, MIS, UN)
-Informal Spelling and Reading Assessments - to check for any areas that need extra review and practice

We will continue to learn new morphology prefixes and suffixes next week! Thank you for reminding your children to read their stories and practice their red words for homework. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or comments!

Reading Update - Week of September 3rd

We are beginning to add some morphology into our reading class!  We will still be following the same structure and order in our lessons, but we will also blend in some morphology concepts.  This week, we learned:

-the prefix UN means not (ex. unreal, unlike)
-age (ex. manage)
-ate (ex. translate, certificate)

Next week, we will learn how to read and spell some other suffixes.  I am absolutely adoring this group of sweet girls.  They are working hard!

Reading Class Update - Week of August 27th

Hi Reading Parents! Thank you for checking in on what we are doing in reading class.  We have been reviewing the OG Reading scope and sequence since the beginning of school.  There were some more challenging rules that we needed more practice in (such as the three suffix rules - The Doubling Rule, E-Drop Rule, and Y-Change Rule).  Last week, we started to read words and listen to the ways we accent syllables in words (ex. "pencil" - the accent is on the first syllable).

This week, we will continue to add to what we talked about last week (accenting).  We will explore the 2-1-1 Doubling Rule (double the consonant in the second syllable if the second syllable has the accent and you're adding a vowel suffix, ex. permitted).  This one is tricky!

Thank you for encouraging your children to read daily, as well as practice their Red Words. As always, let me know if you have any questions!
