WEEK 10 of Third Grade
This week in Third Grade:
ELA
We will continue to focus on ADJECTIVES. We enjoyed reading the book The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt on Friday. We will be discussing the book in detail and enjoy fun book-related activities throughout the upcoming week.
Word of the Week – Every Tuesday, during Language Arts we have a new Word of the Week. We introduce it, define it, and use it in a sentence. Students come up with their own sentence using the word as well as an illustration of their sentence. Our hope is that students will begin to incorporate these words into their speaking and writing vocabulary. Some of the words we have had thus far are: strive, immense, blunder, abode, wallop, and culprit. Ask your student if he/she remembers what these words mean and if he/she can use them in a sentence.
Book Character Dress Up Day on Friday, October 30th – Students may come to school on Friday dressed as their favorite book character. Before they can do this, their book character must be approved by their homeroom teacher. Students need to bring the book their character is from to their teachers for approval by Wednesday, October 28th. Students must be able to sit comfortably in their costumes. No inflatable costumes will be allowed. We will have a brief Character Parade outside around the parking lot Friday morning following chapel. Parents are welcome to watch from their cars. Students who do not wish to dress up should wear their house shirt like normal for Fridays.
Math
Our students did a great job learning strategies for regrouping in subtraction last week. We will finish up with addition and subtraction strategies soon and be moving on to multiplication.
Social Studies
Third graders did a great job on last week’s SWYK over the Indians of Southwest and Plains regions! We will finish learning about the Northeast region this week.
Reading
Allen Reading Group - We are continuing VCe words with a focus on the long i and long o.
GRACEPOINT Word of the Month
Our Word of the Month is KNOWLEDGE. Knowledge means discovering something new so you can be better at whatever you do.
October Memory verse: “The Holy Scriptures teach you how to be saved by believing in Christ Jesus. God has breathed life into all Scripture.” (2 Timothy 3:15-16)
CHAPEL
This past week in chapel, Mr. Williams taught us that “Knowledge is Power.” He taught us that we gain knowledge at certain times and certain seasons in our lives. We also learned that not all knowledge is good and that we are not given all knowledge at once.
Our goal is to learn the right knowledge and then use it the right way. This is known as wisdom. Mr. Williams encouraged us to know our Bibles and partner it with wisdom so we know how and when to use that knowledge in the right way.
Knowing God’s Word allows us to recognize lies and choose the truth. He used 2 Timothy 3:16, "All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right."
HOUSE TIME
Did you know that October is Dyslexia Awareness Month?? This past week during House Time, we had a mini Dyslexia Dash. Students ran just over a mile to raise awareness for Dyslexia.
