Address and Phone Number

First Grade Families,

Starting next Tuesday, January 18, we will begin practicing our phone numbers and address. Students need to be able to say and write both their addresses and phone numbers according to Georgia first grade state standards. We will practice each day and I ask that you practice at home as well. For each one your student can do (write phone number, write address, say phone number, say address) I will give them a sticker. Four stickers will mean they can buy a new desk pet! There will not be a time limit on this. They can take as long as they need to get it. :)

Thanks,

Ms. Barber

Monday

Happy Monday Everyone,

I hope you all had a lovely weekend.

Today, homework went live on Seesaw. It is three assignments, all on Fractions and all due Friday. As always, reading homework should be done every night.

We began working on fractions in math, we read the book Snowmans at Night in writing and wrote about what we would do if we hung out with a snowman at night, we began learning about Dr. Martain, Luther King Jr., went to art class, had reading class time, and enjoyed Janis Youmans (a GRACEPOINT teacher) as our mystery reader. Instead of a second snack time today, we had ketchup and pickles time where students had time to complete old, unfinished work, got to pick a STEAM activity, or worked on math skills one-on-one with me. We also  began our new morning work time: "morning bins." This is a time for students to work on skills such as motor skills, coins, building math problems or words, making lists, or creating sentences. I will be changing the actives up for this time frequently.

Please remember: students need a lunch, a snack (only one now), blue and grey folder a water bottle, and a jack/winter coat for outside time everyday.

Lunch orders for Friday are due by Wednesday at 12:00pm. This week is Pizza Hut.

We have a three day weekend this week. No school next Monday due to MLK Day.

Have a wonderful week,

Ms. B

I hope everyone had a wonderful first few days back in the school grove. It has been great to see my first grade friends, catch up, and review our routines the past two days.

As we enter into the weekend, here are a few reminders, updates, and upcoming events to keep in mind:
  • Yesterday, we welcomed a new friend to our class! We are so glad to have Tyler with us!
  • Starting Monday, we will only have one snack at school. I believe we are at a point where it is unneeded, this will help us begin the second grade transition, and those ten minutes can be valuable for academic reasons. This means all your child should bring to school each day is: a lunch, a water bottle, one snack, and a jacket/coat.
  • Wednesday is late start, school begins at 9:15.
  • Order lunch for Friday by Wednesday at noon (next week is Pizza Hut).
  • Monday, January 18 there is no school due to MLK Day.
  • All three homework assignments will be available on Seesaw on Monday and will be due on Friday!
Next week, we will begin learning about Martin Luther King Jr., fractions, and will do snowman language arts activities (sequencing, retelling a story, cause and effect, writing projects).

Have a wonderful weekend!

Ms. B
It is very important you send your child back to school tomorrow with their iPads and charging cables! Please remember to pack these in the morning. Great work with our Jump Start Review. I look forward to seeing everyone return to school tomorrow safe and healthy.

Enjoy the pictures from today in the slideshow!

Tomorrow is a half day. 12:00 dismissal. No bookbags, snacks, or water bottles. Homework is due. Students may wear Christmas clothes.

Students brought home iPads today. Chargers are in their bags. Please return them them when we come back to school in January. Seesaw activities will be sent out after break.

Tomorrow is Grinch Day in the first grade! I wanted to give you a run-down of how that will look.

We will have all our usual Thursday specials (OG reading, OT, and music. We will have a morning snack, calendar, morning exercise, and lunch and recess as normal). Our "language arts" class time will be writing a couple sentences about how we would make the Grinch grin. We will make cards for people in our school (Mrs. Wood, Mrs. Bice, Mrs. Spruill, Mrs. Angie Strack, and Mrs. Lashley) and deliver them to the recipients along with a Christmas treat. Additionally, we will be playing a silly and fun Grinch game. All of this will take place before 1:00 in the afternoon.

Starting at 1:00, everyone at GRACEPOINT will be breaking up into groups for movies and treats. First grade will stay in our classroom. We will watch the 2018 cartoon version of The Grinch, have Grinch hot chocolate, and green snacks.

Students may wear anything Christmasy, Grinchy, or Who-inspired. They must wear normal uniform shoes. However, they can be as silly as they wish. Feel free to get creative and have fun with it. Dr. Suess characters are anything but normal. 🙂 They only need one snack.

Tomorrow is also the last day of OG reading before the break. Many classes will be reviewing old skills and playing review games tomorrow.

Friday is a 12:00 dismissal. Homework is due on Friday. Please do not send your child to school with a bookbag. They do not need to come to school with anything on Friday, as we will have no normal class time. They may wear festive Christmas outfits, but again, must wear uniform shoes. We will still be running and playing, and I want to be sure they stay safe. We will be celebrating (safe and socially distanced) as a school that morning. First grade will perform a song they learned in music, so be on the lookout for a video of their performance. After the traditional, school-wide chapel and celebration, we will come back to first grade for our class snowman party. They will get a chance to unwrap their gifts from Miss Allen and I during this time. Please remember, due to COVID regulations, we will not be doing a class gift exchange.

Let me know if you have any questions and thank you for a wonderful first half of first grade! I love each of your children so much and it has truly been an honor and a blessing to get to know them over the course of the past few months. I wake up every day excited to come to work because it means getting to spend the day with them, learning, and watching them grow into incredible people. I am so proud of them! Enjoy a well-deserved break!

Merry Christmas and see you all in 2021,

Ms. Barber
