Also, if you have not yet, please bring "filler" for the shakers students will be making in music class by tomorrow and our money bags by Friday. :)
Thank you :)

Reminder

1st Grade Parents,

Please remember to send water bottles to school each day! :) We do not have any water fountains at GP.

Thanks,

Ms. Barber

Today, we worked on proper nouns with our friend Polly the Parrot who only likes to eat named brand crackers!

Reminders

Hey First Grade Families,

Remember tomorrow is our celebration day-bring a favorite stuffed animal to school. It is fun lunch day so no need to send a lunch to school! Just send your student with two snacks and a water bottle. There was no homework this week due to the crazy schedules, but homework will come home on Monday as usual.

Thank you,
Miss Barber

Today, we tied Language Arts into Math class by voting, surveying, and graphing our favorite Laura Numeroff books that were read in class over the course of the past two week! These were our results: If You Give a Moose a Muffin was the favorite of our class!
Thank you to our 8th Grade book buddies for reading to us today! We loved having you visit our class!

Congrats to our friend Serafina for winning our first estimation jar challenge of the year! Students were asked on Friday to estimate how many Airhead Minis were in a jar. The student who came the closest without going over, would get to take home the contents of the jar. There were 35 candies in the jar. Serafina came the closest without going over with a guess of 25! We will complete another estimation jar challenge at the beginning of October!
Hello First Grade Families,

Happy September! I have a few updates for you!
  • Please see the attached letter (also available to view in your child's grey take home folder) for information regarding our special rewards day.
  • Reminder that homework is due on Friday. Thank you for doing blue folders and red words each night.
  • Please continue to send two snacks and a GRACEPOINT sweatshirt/jacket to school.
  • Friday fun lunch this week is Jason's Deli. Please order by noon tomorrow.
  • Friday is a 1:00 dismissal.
  • Special student shout out to Bailey for bring a book to school today! We enjoyed reading it!
  • Fall Break: September 28-October 2.
  • Please practice your child's lines for "If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" a few nights a week. They were sent home yesterday and highlighted. We will perform this with puppets on the Friday before Fall Break (September 25) for the school during pledge and prayer via Zoom. We will perform it later that day via Zoom as well for you all. Please email me sometime before September 20 with a time you are available to view this short play on this day. I will try my best to find a time that works for everyone.
  • We will begin studying nouns, verbs, and additives next week using stories about bears in language arts. In math, we will continue with graphing and even/odd numbers. Social studies will focus on Teddy Roosevelt.
  • Reminder: it is a long weekend this weekend due to Labor Day!
  • Please send me your parent homework letters by Friday! Thank you to those who have already sent them to me. They have been a joy to read, as well as, very informative.
  • I am continuing to tweak our class seating chart. As a reminder, due to the nature of our school, your child may use a wiggle stool/wiggle cushion, as well as, other forms of flexible seating while in class. This is to help them focus and learn. The needs of each student in our classroom are different, therefore, they may have different needs when it comes to seating! :)
Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Barber

Monday Updates

Happy Monday,

  • Homework begins today! It is due Friday.
  • Please practice red words and read from your blue folder each night.
  • I am sending home a copy of our play for the end of September with your child today. Their lines are highlighted. Please practice when you can
  • Today, we discussed Brighton Academy in first grade. GRACEPOINT sponsors four students from this school in Ethiopia (each house has a child to help support.) We ask that each student at GRACEPOINT bring in one dollar a month to send to Brighton. This money helps with student's tuition, food, and water for their family. At the end of the year, the house that raised the most money over the course of the school year will be rewarded house points (these go to determine the winner of the giant house cup trophy in May.) We ask that you do not simply give your child the dollar, but rather, that they earn it through chores. I have attached a link to the Brighton Academy website.

Brain Break and Science Experiment

Huge shout out to our friend Ian who showed us a fun science experiment during our post-reading "brain break." We all enjoyed watching the magic. :)
Today in math, we read If You Give a Cat a Cupcake. Students cut out their own cupcakes and added multi-colored sprinkles. We then wrote addition problems based on how many sprinkles they each chose to add! We hung them up with out If You Give a Mouse a Cookie projects.

August 28 Week End Focus

It was a great week in first grade! Tomorrow is FriYAY! We have fun lunch (Moe's) and HOUSE time! Please wear House shirts tomorrow. I am planning to surprise students with cupcakes or cookies tomorrow to celebrate the first week of our Laura Numeroff study, so students only need one snack tomorrow. As always, please contact me with any questions or concerns.
