Monday Updates

Good Morning and Happy Monday,
 
I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing weekend. 
 
Here is a peak into first grade this week:
 
Social Studies: Weekly readers review
Math: We will complete our unit on telling time this week
Writing: We will begin studying poetry. On Thursday, we will take a short poetry break to complete a writing activity based on The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. 
Novel Study: We will begin a novel study on the book Socks by Beverly Cleary this week. The purpose of this is to work on comprehension during reading. Today, we will learn about the author and introduce the book. Beginning tomorrow, we will read one chapter each day before answering comprehension questions. When we finish the novel, we will practice summarizing by writing about the book. This study will last a few weeks.
Homework: 3 Seesaw assignments all due on Friday. 1 assignment is a map skills review, 1 is an Earth day poem activity, and 1 is telling time practice. 
Earth Day: Earth Day is on Thursday. We will be reading and studying the book The Lorax by Dr. Seuss. After reading the story, we will complete word problems based on the characters in the book during math, write about what it would be like to be the Lorax, and complete a Lorax craft. One Friday, during our hour together on Friday, we will watch the movie The Lorax. 
 
Reminders and Updates:
  • Friday's Fun Lunch is Zaxby's. Please order by Wednesday at 12:00pm. 
  • Field Trip!! We will be taking a field trip on April 29 (a week from Thursday) to Eastside Christian School to see their production of Matilda. We will be taking a bus and will leave school at 9:00 (no reading today). We expect to return to GP around 11:30 that day. I have purchased the book Matilda by Ronald Dahl to read during our read aloud time before attending the play. 
  • Giddy Up GRACEPOINT: You will be receiving more information on this fundraiser this week. On Friday for HOUSE time, we will have a pep rally to get excited for Giddy Up. This is in place of our annual gala to raise money for tuition assistance at GRACEPOINT. On May 14, we will be celebration to wrap up the fundraiser. Students will receive prizes for every level of fundraising they reach, and one student will get to slime a teacher! This is also HOUSE competition. 
  • ABC count down to summer begins on Wednesday. See the calendar that came home in your student's grey folder today for more information. 
  • Field Day: May 14
  • Last day of School: May 26
  • Wednesday is late start! School begins at 9:15.
  • Mother's Day: We will be making a book for all of our awesome moms as a gift for Mother's Day over the next few weeks.
