Wednesday Updates

Hello Everyone,

So far this week we have worked on the -dge rule. No word in the English language ends in j. So, in a one syllable word, with one short vowel, that ends in /j/, we spell it -dge! Everyone did well on this rule!

Today, we introduced -tch. Please read the -tch story and practice reading and spelling red words tonight and tomorrow for homework.

This week's red word is "how."

I look forward to speaking with you all next week during conferences!

Thanks,

Ms. Barber

Update and Game Plan

Hello All,

Happy Thursday!

Today we began moving away from the three sounds of -ed. I plan to surprise our class with donuts tomorrow as a reward for working so hard during this skill!

Today, we introduced the suffix -ing as in jumping. This suffix means the action is happening presently. For homework tonight please read the 10 -ing sentences and practice reading and spelling red words.

Tomorrow we will introduce the suffix -est. Over the weekend sometime please read the 10 -est sentences.

Next week: I plan to introduce -dge as in "fudge," "bridge," or "budge." This makes /j/ sound as no word in the English language ends in the letter j!

I am hoping to cover -dge and -tch next week before conferences.

Please let me know if you have any questions and have a great end of your week.

Ms. Barber

Welcome Back

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful break.

This week in reading, we will be finishing up our study of the three sounds of -ed. I was impressed with how well we remembered this today! I want to review it this week, as it is a hard skill, and then we will be ready to move onto /dge/ which say /j/ like "fudge." I told our class today that there may be a special treat involved in learning this skill!

Our red word this week is: "many."

Homework for today and tomorrow: practice reading and spelling red words. Read number 1-11 on the new three sounds of -ed read sheet.

Let me know if you have any questions and have a wonderful week!

Ms. B

No school next week! Please practice the red word "above" tonight (reading and spelling) and read the front page of "Wishes Granted" for homework! Enjoy your week off.

Reading This Week

Happy Monday,

This week in reading we will continue working on the three sounds of "-ed."

Our red word this week is "above." Please practice reading it and spelling it every night.

My tentative homework plan for the week is as follows (please remember, due to the diagnostic nature of our school, this can easily change):

Monday: Read the first half of "Ducks on the Pond"
Tuesday: Read the second half of "Ducks on the Pond"
Wednesday: Read the first half of "Wishes Granted"
Thursday: Read the second half of "Wishes Granted"

Thank you and have a great week,

Ms. B

Happy Monday!

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!

This week in reading our red word is "again." We are working on the three sounds of -ed as in "spilled" which says /d/, "blasted" which saw /ed/, or "picked" which say /t/.

Homework for this week:
Monday-Thursday night: practice reading and spelling red words.
Monday: Read the first row of words on the highlighted sheet
Tuesday: Read the middle row of words on the highlighted sheet
Wednesday: Read the final row of words on the highlighted sheet
Thursday/Friday: Read the sentence read sheet

Let me know if you have any questions/concerns. This is one of the more difficult skill that we will work on this year. Don't worry if your student does not instantly grasp it. We will work on it for a while. :)

Thanks and have a great week. Only 9 days until the break!

Ms. B

Reading Updates

Happy Wacky Wednesday,

We continued working on FLoSS words with suffixes and became today. We will continue this until Friday. On Monday, we will shift our attention to the three sounds of -ed and the red word again.

This will be the last skill introduced before the February break.

Please continue to practice red words and read from the blue folder each night. It truly makes a difference!

Thanks,

Ms. B

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to GP!

A few reminders as we head into reading for this week:
  • Practice reading and spelling red words every night.
  • Read the story "The Class Trip" tonight for homework.
  • We are working on the red word "became" this week.
  • We are working on FLoSS words with -es and -s suffixes this week.
  • I am planning to move to the three sounds of -ed next week after finishing FLoSS this week. It is starting to click and we will be ready to move on after a few more days.
Have a great week,

Ms. B

Tuesday Homework

Happy Tuesday,

We continued working on FLoSS words with suffixes and the red word often today.

Tonight's homework: practice red words (reading and spelling) and read the sentences on the read sheet!

Have a great day,

Ms. B

Reading Homework

Happy Monday!

For homework tonight, read the words on your new read sheet and practice reading and spelling your red words. The new red word for this week is: often.

We began adding suffixes to FLoSS words such as buzzes, pills, hills, puffs, kisses, busses.

Thank you,

Ms . B

Reading Updates

Welcome Back!

Yesterday and today we did a final review of FLoSS words.

Starting Monday, we will be adding the suffixes -s and -es to these words (examplesL bosses, fizzes, spills, fluffs). This can be a tricky concept, so I expect us to spend a few weeks on it. :)

The red word will be: often.

There will not be a story it the blue folder next week, rather, I will assign a read sheet with words and sentences for homework until we get use to the added suffixes. It is incredibly important that your student reads it each night, as this will help reinforce what we are working on it class.

Thank you all for your hard work during our home days. As always, let me know if there are any questions or concerns!

Have a happy weekend,

Ms. B

Reading

Happy Thursday,

Thank you all for a wonderful last week of reading before Christmas break.

Today in class, we completed our morphology and phonemic awareness activities, completed drills 1-3, practiced writing red words in shaving cream, worked on our letter b's and d's with a flashlight, and played several review games (we reviewed FLoSS words and old skills as well).

You do not need to do homework tonight. If you wish to practice red words over the break, that would be fantastic (but it is not required).

Upon returning to school in January, we will work on the FLoSS rule one more week to refresh our memories after an extended time off. Then, we will be adding the suffixes -s and -es to FLoSS words.

I have greatly enjoyed getting to know and working with your students.

Have a very Merry Christmas and a bright start to your 2021!

Ms. Barber
