FLoSS Word Chant

Parents,

In the attached PowerPoint, I added a video of the FLoSS Rule chant.

The words are:

"In a one syllable word with one short vowel that ends in F, L, S, Z, double it!"

Today, we worked on the FLoSS rule, we reviewed the red word "month," and practiced the story "Biff and Jill."

Homework: Read "Biff and Jill" twice, practice the chant one time, and practice reading and spelling red words.

Thank you,

Ms. Barber

Tuesday December 15

Hello!

Today, we reviewed the read word "what." We worked on FLoSS words. We highlighted FLoSS words in our homework story for the week.

Homework: read Biff and Jill twice, practice reading and spelling red words, and practice the FLoSS rule cheer.

Tomorrow will be more FLoSS practice and reviewing the red word month. We will play a FLoSS word memory game.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks,

Ms. Barber

Updates

Today, we continued working on the FLoSS rule. We will keep working on this all week. We reviewed the red word "friend." We will review a different red word each day this week. We will not have reading on Friday. Thursday will be our typical review games and activities that we typically do on Fridays. For homework, please read the story and practice the cheer, and reading and spelling red words every night this week. After the break, we will add "-es" to FLoSS words.

Thank you and email me with any questions or concerns,

Ms. Barber

Updates!

Today, we continued FLoSS learning and the red word "about." Please read all 10 sentences on the FLoSS word sheet for homework tonight and tomorrow, practice the FLoSS rule cheer three times, and read/practice spelling this week's red word. Next week, I will send home a story for the FLoSS rule and we will work on the red word "friend."

Thank you,

Ms. Barber

Tuesday, December 8, 2020

Hello all,

Tonight for homework read sentences 6-10 on the FLoSS read sheet, practice reading and spelling the red word (about), and practice the FLoSS cheer three times!

Thank you,

Ms. Barber

FLoSS Rule Rules!

Happy Monday!

Today we started the FLoSS rule! At the end of last week, I felt like we had mastered /wh/ and were ready to move on.

The FLoSS rule states: in a one syllable word, with one short vowel, that ends in an f, l, s, or z, you double the final letter. Some examples: Bill, cuff, fizz, kiss.

Homework tonight: practice the new red word (about) both reading and spelling, read 1-5 on the FLoSS sentence sheet. We will highlight words tomorrow in class, practice the FLoSS cheer one time.

Let me know if you have any questions. We will camp out on this skill until break!

Reading Updates

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break.

Today, we began working on the /wh/ diagraph sound as in "whip," "wham," or "whisk."

This week's red word is "month." It is a tricky one. When you practice it for homework each night, please practice spelling and reading it and be sure your child does not leave out the "n."

Tonight, read the story "Wham! Whop!" You may stop at the green dot and only need to read it one time through. It may help your student to hear your read it one time first.

Tomorrow, we will read the second half and highlight the /wh/ words. The second half will be tomorrow's homework. Wednesday and Thursday you will read the whole thing!

I promised them that, after we finish /wh/, I will have a story to practice that stars our class as its subjects. They are very excited for this. As of now, I am planning to work on /wh/ the next two weeks, with the last week of school being review of old skills. Of course, that can always change depending on the needs of our class.

Please contact me with any questions,

Ms. Barber

Thursday Updates

Today we review the red word "both" and worked on beginning r blends as in; grab, trop, or drip. They did well with this!

Please read the stories "Grab the Flag" and "The Frogs" one time each for homework. Both stories are on one page.

Tomorrow is fun Friday! We will practice red words in shaving cream, write words with sidewalk chalk, play review games, and read our blue folders!

I am so proud of them this week! Good work! Enjoy your holiday break!

Updates

Our reading class was visited by a tour yesterday and today! Your students got to show off their skills to visitors and they rocked it! I am very proud of how hard they have worked in reading this week. The week before a break is always hard, but our class has truly done great work this week.

Today went very well with /qu/ and "were."

Tonight's story is "The Squid." Please read it twice (it is short) and practice reading and spelling red words.

Tomorrow we will review beginning r blends and the red word "both." There will be two *short* stories, to be read once each for homework on Thursday night.

After the break, the red word for the week will be month and we will begin the /wh/ skill. I expect us to work on this skill for two full weeks, leaving one week in December to review old skills like we have this week. However, as we are diagnostic and prescriptive here at GRACEPOINT, that can change based on the needs of our class. This is just what I expect our three weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas to look like as of now!

As always, thank you for your support and please contact me with any questions or comments.

Tuesday Updates

The girls did great again today in reading!

Today, we reviewed /ch/ and the red word "what." The story for homework is "The Chimp Grabs the Chips." You only need to read through it one time. The green underlined words are story words they have not learned and may not know yet!

Tomorrow's review is the /qu/ sound and the red word "were." The story will be "The Squid" and it is much shorter than the pervious two stories. You will read through it twice! :)

Have a fantastic Tuesday night,

Ms. Barber

Updates

Happy Monday!

This week is a review week. Today we reviewed /th/ and the red word "was." The story for homework is "T-Rex wants a bath." Tomorrow we will review /ch/ and the red word "what." "The Chimp Grabs the Chips" will be the story coming home for homework. I am so proud of the girls' hard work reading their first story today! They did a beautiful job.

It does help if you read it to them first before they read it to you!

Let me know if you have any questions,

Ms. Barber

Updates

Welcome Back!

I missed the girls over the few days off. It was great to see them back today. However, I enjoyed talking with you all over the past few days.

This week's red word is "were." The skill is /nch/+es as in "lunches," "bunches," or "crunches." We are celebrating today that we can read and spell words with eight letters!!

Next week, the last week before the Thanksgiving holiday, we will review old skills and old red words. I do not want to start a new skill or learn a new red word before a week off from school. We will be reviewing /qu/ over a few days next week, as well as, beginning blends.

This week is the last week of the school year that your student will bring home a read sheet with words and sentences on it for homework. Starting next week, I will be sending home stories and short passages for our reading homework. I think we have reached a point were they can confidently read through a story.

Thank you, and as always, email or call me with questions.
